Treating War Veterans

Dear Group:
For sometime I've been thinking what a difference homeopathy could make in the lives of returning Iraqi war veterans. Other homeopaths have expressed interest in being involved as well, but finding the right forum through which to donate our services has been difficult.
Give An Hour is a nonprofit organization that provides mental health services to U.S. troops and their families. I contacted them about donating my services as a homeopath, and they are interested in compiling a list of homeopaths who would be interested in helping.
If any of you are interested, please reply directly to me with your contact information. I'll undertake to compile a list for Give An Hour.

That's certainly a valid idea, meeting a need for an underserved population that can probably benefit from homeopathic treatment. I'll contact them. Is it possible, if people from this list actually do some of this work, to create a place where we can share cases, with the thought of publishing the outcomes so others may become more aware of the use of homeopathy as a tool to aid in recovery from trauma?

Dale, I visited the Give an Hour website, and looked at their description. They are asking providers to donate an hour a week for a year (presumably, given a psychotherapy model, they expect that a provider will be working with one person during that time). They also, at the bottom of the site, ask for an affidavit that one is a licensed mental health provider with "adequate malpractice insurance." Have you discussed those aspects of their requirements with them? Also, for general information, they specify that the interventions will take place either on the phone or in the provider's office.
I assume, Dale, that if homeopaths who are not licensed mental health providers are to participate, we/ they should do so as part of a group agreement that you negotiate with them -- given that we don't actually fit the model they have in mind.

Hi, Rosemary,
No, we do not fit their "model." They are aware that there is no licensure for homeopaths in the U.S., except for Arizona. The malpractice insurance issue is one we have not yet discussed, and this could be a problem as most homeopaths do not carry it. I wanted to see what kind of response I received from to gauge how much interest there is in our community in offering services through such a venue. Obviously, if we cannot come to a mutually acceptable agreement that would allow homeopaths to participate in accordance with our practice guidelines, this will not work.
