Subject: Research conference 18th June
Dear All,
There are just a few places left for the research conference organised by Jayney Goddard for Wednesday, 18th June, in London . Copied below is the list of speakers, plus topics, and booking info rmation. Please forward this to anyone you think might be interested.
BW Karin
just wanted to let you know that our speakers have now finalised their topics and I am delighted that I can announce their abstracts below. This isn't a running order for the event - I am simply supplying this info rmation as many people have been asking me for it. (Please also note that some abstracts are longer than others. This is not a reflection of the length of the lecture - most will be around 30 minutes with ample time for questions.) Furthermore, at the end of the day we will hold an interactive discussion panel where further issues can be raised.
I will email you early next week with a finalised programme.
I also wanted to let you know that we are very nearly sold out, so if you haven't already done so, you can book your seat here or if your email service doesn't allow links please cut and paste the following into your browser:
http://homeopathyresearch.eventbrite.com Do remember that if you don't want to book online you can call us on 0845 129 8434 to speak to a real person who will be able to assist you.
Sincerely,
Jayney

Title: "An overview of the current state of the research in homeopathy"
Abstract:
Homeopathy is often thought to be unamenable to scientific research. Historically, this state of affairs appeared through a lack of communication from both sides of the divide: scientists carrying out research in ways contrary to standard homeopathic practice and homeopaths feeling that homeopathy cannot be reconciled with modern science. However, the present growth in scientific publications in homeopathy proves that bridges are being built. In this presentation, I will give an overview of the ways modern science can meaningfully approach and enrich the field of homeopathy. I will present the research that already exists, demonstrating how homeopathy can become a valid field of scientific research, building on the knowledge of homeopaths, exploring its range of action, and expanding our understanding of the way homeopathic remedies work. The scientific research in homeopathy, although still in its infancy, is growing at a fast pace and already, in certain areas, the evidence of homeopathy's effectiveness is overwhelming. This evidence is being generated in many fields of research, from physico-chemical experiments to human clinical trials. As the momentum of the research grows and the evidence accumulates there is every indication that homeopathy is set to become a bona fide field of scientific research. Finally, I will present a new organisation, the Homeopathy Research Institute, dedicated to promoting and undertaking scientific research in homeopathy.

Title of talk: Homeopathy and the New Fundamentalism
Abstract: Though in use for over 200 years and still benefiting millions of people worldwide today, homeopathy is currently under continuous attacks for being 'unscientific'. The reasons for this can be understood in terms of what might be called a 'New Fundamentalism', emanating particularly but not exclusively from within biomedicine and supported in some sections of the media.
This talk will give an outline of the New Fundamentalism, whose hallmarks include the denial of evidence for the efficacy of any therapeutic modality that cannot be consistently 'proven' using double-blind randomised controlled trials. It also excludes explanations of homeopathy's efficacy; ignores, excoriates, or considers incomprehensible current research data supporting those explanations, particularly from outside biomedicine: it is also not averse to using experimental bias, hear-say, and innuendo in order to discredit homeopathy. Thus, the New Fundamentalism is itself unscientific.

Title: Homotoxicology
Abstract: Homotoxicology is similar to homeopathy but not the same; it has developed over the last 50 years in Italy and Germany . The use of combination remedies prescribed on clinical indication allows for double blind trial design. New categories of remedies based upon biological molecules open new possibilities for measuring remedy effects and clinical outcomes.
Oliver Dowding
Oliver has been and continues to be involved with a variety of agri-political posts and interests, seeking to deliver both a better environment in which to live and farm, better health for consumers, and also improved conditions for the business. These have included being on the NFU Council for 5 years, chairing its Organic Committee for 5 years, and being Vice-Chairman of the Organic Milk Suppliers Co-operative (OMSCO) for 7 years.
Title: "If homoeopathic success is all in the patient's mind, how does this work for animals?"
Abstract:
There is much debate over the efficacy of homoeopathy, how it works and what it does to the recipient patient. Oliver will explore this in the context of the animal kingdom. He will speak from his experiences of keeping 500 head of dairy livestock for 14 years, their health challenges having been resolved primarily by homoeopathic remedies.
Oliver will explain that cows are not inherent liars or fraudulent creatures, have no axe to grind, nor a commercial position to maintain or enhance. Furthermore, neither has Oliver, nor did his various herdsmen who undertook much of the disease analysis, remedy selection and application.

Title: Homeopathy: Healthy Medicine or Heresy?
Abstract: In recent times, instead of being welcomed by the medical establishment, homeopathy finds itself coming under increasing attack. Why?
In the UK , the NHS has provided 'free' healthcare for over half a century, at a current cost to the nation of £100 billion a year. These costs are escalating, exacerbated by poor hygiene within our hospitals and a new, antibiotic resistant generation of superbugs. Conventional medicine's emphasis on categorising conditions may benefit data collection, but does not necessarily improve patient wellbeing. By contrast, homeopathy focuses on the consequences of the patient's disorder, and provides them with the means to facilitate their own healing. Within the NHS, the patient's right to choice is frequently compromised by lack of resources, lack of funding or unrealistic targets set by the Department of Health (DoH). Under the circumstances, it is clear that we need to move away from perpetrating the 'national sickness industry', and move towards adopting a collaborative approach to healthcare delivery, in which we use all the healing tools available, including homeopathy.
Hundreds and thousands of patients, whose conditions have not been improved by conventional medicine, have found relief through homeopathy. Their testimonials cannot be discarded because of the vested interests of the pharmaceutical industry, biotech, or a handful of bigots with their selective interpretation of science. Individual choice within healthcare should be the fundamental right of any society that wishes to call itself 'civilised'.
Stephen Gordon
Stephen Gordon MCH, RShom FSHom is the General Secretary of the European Council for Classical Homeopathy and also Coordinator, European Forum for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Title: 'Homeopathy and CAM Research - a European Perspective'
Abstract: Stephen will speak about the current EU framework programmes for Health and for Research and the funding possibilities they present, a new initiative to establish a European CAM Research Information Centre, a proposed ECCH research project, some past research studies and initiatives and what should be our priorities.
Dr Rob Verkerk
Dr Rob ert Verkerk BSc, MSc, DIC, PhD was appointed Executive Director of the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) in February 2002. Prior to this he was a post-doctoral Research Fellow at Imperial College , University of London , specialising in sustainable agriculture.
Title: Deconstructing Professor Ernst's Evidence-Based Medicine (EbM) Approach to the Evaluation of Homeopathy and Other CAM Therapies.
Abstract: Professor Ernst's group at Peninsula Medical School , Exeter University , has produced a body of work amounting to some 1,100 peer-reviewed publications, with over 70 relating to homeopathy, the majority of which demonstrate negative findings. In this presentation, Dr Verkerk will demonstrate why negative findings are to be expected given methodological and statistical flaws in typical randomised controlled trials, so-called Evidence-based Medicine (EbM) approaches used for evaluation of efficacy and safety. He will also expose key confounding factors and suggest more appropriate approaches to the scientific evaluation of homeopathy and other CAM modalities.

Title: Homeopathic success in treating pandemics and epidemics in the last two hundred years.
Abstract: Homeopathy has a rich history of being an extremely successful therapeutic approach in some of the most severe situations - pandemic and epidemic disease. Over the last two hundred years, homeopathy has performed exceptionally well in treating diseases that are extremely serious and usually have a high mortality rate. This historical data has been collated over the years by homeopaths - who were also highly respected medical doctors. These dedicated men and women had the foresight and intelligence to realise that potentised, homoeopathically prescribed, medicines were a viable, inexpensive and highly efficient form of treatment.
