I homeschooled my daughter (from elementary to when she finished her first college degree at 16 years). From mid elementary onward we used college texts - or whatever material was great. I completely agree that most of the stuff published for children is 'dumbed down' so we just used the 'real' material. So what if it takes 8 months to get through a topic? Just find the best possible materials that are clear and use them. Go slow - let your child learn to use a dictionary and encyclopedia to work through the tough stuff. Set aside plenty of time to talk about what they just read and what it really means. Ask her how she would explain it to someone her age. Use library resources. We had a wonderful librarian who - once she got the idea of what was going on - was a great help in finding materials via interlibrary loans. It is a wonderful way to learn and sets them up to learn anything through life. Once we got away from the stuff published for children - I was amazed to see how easily she learned anything and everything.
