post surgery care for small dog

Post by Connie »

Hello,
My dog is in surgery at this moment for leg fractures and wounds due to a run in with a pit bull (through it's gate). She has been through a lot and has been on narcotics for pain, antibiotics and I want to do what's best for her when she comes home. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Phosphorus is generally used to ensure clearance of the anasthetic...I have just treated a dog with a ruptured crutciate ligament that had surgery...a single dose only..then followed with Hypericum...( punctures)...in water dose, only when the animal seemed in discomfort..she apparently had two the day home, two the following day and a single the third...none since...she was off the pain relief within two days, and as the owner on my advice refused anti's to take home...the Hypericum has dealt with that also...along with cleaning the incision regularly for a couple of days with saltwater and followed with calendula tincture...clean pink and rapidly healed....2 weeks on, and the dog is having to be restrained to prevent her from putting the knee at risk(?)...vets opinion.
I also advised, probiotics/live yoghurt for the gut to attempt to deal with any possible flare-up of candida from the iv anti's.
see David Little for ideas...

but mostly you need to see what symptoms the dog shows when home.
and regardless of what the above says..check repertorisation anyway.
And I don't think the size of the dog is relevant.

well, you might give her arnica immediately for shock and
injury. locally, you ought to be able to find 30c potency
which you can give orally 2-3x day for 1-2 days. after that
you might want to consider a remedy for the broken bones. i
have had good luck with symphytum 30c with animals and people.
30c 1/day for several days. watch for improvement and stop.
you might want to apply hypercal or calendula lotion to the
skin wounds.

Ruta might also be needed.

Hi,
Symphytum is known to be specific for
accelerating healing of broken bones.

Very sorry to hear this.
I would use:
Symphytum 30C or 200C for bone pain, aqueous, till healed.
Arnica 200C aqueous for general trauma till healed.
Calc Phos 6X tissue salt - plenty of it - to help calcification of bone -
crushed in food.
Hypericum for pain as needed (200C?) aqueous.
Calendula 200C instead of antibiotic till all is healerd incluiding
internally - aqueous.
Topical hypercal cream on all skin breaks including surgical.
(This is cream containing calendula and hypericum)

I may get criticism for suggesting multiple remedies but this is an acute
situation and not one needing a single simillimum - so it is all
appropriate for specific issues that exist and each matches a specific
trauma condition.

If there is severe mental anguish as well you need to follow up the
physical issues with emotional matched remedy (look at Arnica or Aconitum
napellus or Staphisagria or..... - depends what matches - this part needs
to be specific to the case).

Namaste,
Irene
