ALF Medical Relief in Kibera Slums, Kenya

On Sunday, 20 January, Abha Light joined with other relief organizations in a collective medical camp at Kibera slum, Nairobi. The anger and frustration of the poor over the disputed elections erupted in some of the worst violence seen in Kenya since Independence with destruction of property and lives. The resulting situation has left many people without food, medicine, jobs, homes. Thousands across the country have been uprooted as internal refugees.

Nairobi's Kibera slum, located in the constiutency of opposition leader, Raila Odinga, is one of the hardest hit areas in the post-election violence that has rocked Kenya. Kibera is one of the largest slums in eastern Africa, with about 1 million population.

Since ALF lacks its own security infrastructure, we joined with conventional doctors from other organizations in an open free clinic in one of the worst hit areas of Kibera. About 300 patients came altogether and about 50 were treated by ALF with homeopathy.

It shocked us to see Kibera firsthand. Businesses and houses, buses were burnt out. Trees uprooted, the roads blocked with barracades and debris. It's like a war zone and painful to witness in this, otherwise generally peaceful, place.

The clinic was conducted in the burnt out premises of the hosting organization. The whole block of businesses were looted, burnt down and thoroughly destroyed.
