Dear Dr Nitin Vala,
The BBC has not declared (a) how does this prize advance the interests of society
(b) where the funding for this prize has come from,
certainly not from a believer in homeopathy.
So then it boils down to the financial interest or rather the controlling interest or motive of the prize –
the medical status quo benefits the deep pocketed pharma industry by allowing them
to continue to rake in hundreds of billions of dollars,
severely stress entire economies (by the spiraling financial and health costs of conventional medicine)
and societies (by the mushrooming iatrogenic sicknesses in consequence of conventional medicine).
You as an Indian can rest assured that homeopathy works, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare is the President of the Governing Body of The Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy.
The Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973, Act No. 59 OF 1973 ensures the safety of the patient and the fitness of the homeopathic doctors. There are 37 Institutes/Units of The Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, including 17 clinical research units, 3 clinical verification units and 3 drug proving research units. The Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (headed by a Secretary to the Government of India), administers various schemes for strengthening of research institutions and renders advice on implementation and monitoring of various research programmes.
Homeopathy has been introduced in mainline private and government hospitals on popular demand and is gaining ground surely and steadily. India has about 300,000 qualified homeopathic doctors.
The Council has completed 68 clinical studies (34 Disease related and 34 Drug related) till date in general as well as tribal areas. The salient achievements in disease related clinical studies have been in HIVAIDS (Pilot study; Double blind, Multi-centric and Drug related), Sickle Cell Anaemia, Problems in mentally retarded children, Cervicitis & Cervical Erosion, Bronchial asthma, Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI), Drug addiction, Filariasis, Iron Deficiency Anaemia, Sinusitis, Skin Disorders (Psoriasis, Allergic dermatitis and Vitiligo) and Menorrhagia.
The Council has formulated 18 new protocols, on modern scientific parameters in consultation with experts from AIIMS, National Institute for Communicable Diseases, ICMR, Safdarjung Hospital, in view of conducting research along Evidence Based Medicine. These 17 Disease related studies and 01 Drug related study, which are in progress in both general and tribal areas. These studies are Depressive Episode, Schizophrenia, Chronic Bronchitis, Chronic sinusitis, Benign prostate hyperplasia, Distress during climacteric (Menopausal) years, Furunculosis, Gastroenteritis, Acute Bronchitis, Renal calculi, Acute Rhinitis in children, Vitiligo, HIV/AIDS (Open study), HIV/AIDS (Drug related), Diabetic Distal Symmetric Polyneuropathy, Tropical Eosinophilia, Diabetic foot ulcer, and Acute Diarrhoeal Disease in Children.
Since inception, Council has taken up Clinical Verification studies on 87 drugs out of which study on 52 drugs have been completed. Studies on 35 drugs proved by the Council are currently in progress. Out of these 87 drugs, 51 have been proved by the Council. Data of 25 drugs have been compiled while compilation of 27 drugs is in progress. Data of 25 drugs have also been published.
The Council has proved 71 drugs used in Homoeopathy, on healthy human volunteers (1979-2005). Proving data of 51 drugs have been published in the quarterly bulletins of the Council. A book on Homoeopathic Drugs proved by the Council (containing data of 38 drugs) has also been published. Most of these drugs are of indigenous origin. Proving of 05 drugs is in progress. Proving reports of 19 drugs are currently under compilation.
The ONLY reason that the Government of India continues the funding of these projects is that they have exhibited excellent and repeatable success on the ground . If homeopathy were scientifically proven not to produce excellent patient cure rate the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare who is a dynamic allopathic doctor would not have continued the funding.
Also see the extracts below if you are not convinced that the BBC prize is nothing but a sheer waste of time and a serious insult to all respectable homeopaths.
If you intend to be a good homeopathic doctor start devoting your spare time to delve deep into the science and art of homeopathy and do not get sidetracked by red herrings placed in your path by BBC or whoever is behind this quack offer of a million dollars.
Regards.

Well said!
The prize is offered by James Randi - he is a magician by trade and was instrumental in discrediting Benveniste and his important research into the memory of water back in the mid-80's . The BBC devoted an episode of their Horizon series to exactly this, in 2004 I think it was - lining up a group of well respected scientists (who incidentally knew nothing about homeopathic method) to purportedly repeat the experiment done by Prof Ennis and others which seemed to replicate what Benveniste had found. From a homeopath's point of view, the endeavour was a fiasco in every sense of the word - the experiment was flawed, "for some reason" Ammonium Chloride was used as a buffer - known to cause cell lysis - in an experiment designed to measure cell activity!!! And that's just one example. Randi presents himself as simply interested in the truth but he is a showman who spends his time discrediting such things as alternative and complementary therapies and seducing people with the possibility of the prize.
With all due respect, I advise you stay as far away from him as you can and focus on good homeopathic research and healing this planet.
Best regards,
Carol

Interestingly James Randi stated at the end of the Horizon documentry that he full well expected that oneday Homeopathy would be proven to work. (he just didnt want it done when it was his $1,000,000 up for grabs.) I havea video copy of that documentary. It caused a bit of backlash for a while here in Australia after it was shown. Pauline

Also interesting is that video is no longer available on U-tube. Wonder why. I did watch it a few months ago and felt repulsed by the lack of knowledge given and the demeaning child-like riicule of the profession. Poor fellow he seems so misinformed and misguided.
