I have finally understood what is so discouraging in reading some of the basic old books: it's the language!
For example, would somebody be as kind as to explain to me the meaning of the pair of words 'vegetative sphere', which Cowperthwaite uses in his Textbook of MM for the following (sample) remedies:
Sepia: 'Affects especially the portal, hepatic, and the female sexual systems, and diminishes in general the reproductive energies of the VEGETATIVE SPHERE.'
Silica: 'Acts powerfully upon the VEGETATIVE SPHERE, affecting more especially the organic substance of the body and involving prominently mucous surfaces, glandular structures, bones and joints.'
In this last sentence he uses another of those terms: 'THE ORGANIC SUBSTANCE OF THE BODY'. Now, is there any substance in the body which is *not* organic?
Feeling helpless,
Maly

Re: Vegetative sphere??? The organic substance of the body???
No idea about “vegetative sphere” and am going to be interested in the answers, but in the case of “the organic substance” I expect he means as opposed to the Vital Force (spirit/soul, whatever). For “vegetative sphere” Yasgur would have a good answer no doubt. I have mislaid my copy or else I would look it up for you. Teresa (in Northern VA)

yasgur only talks about the vegetative dystonia or reflexes. vegetative, he says
"refers to the fact that many of our bodily functions are plant-like or qutomatic
(in other words, we don't think about them and these are under the control fof
the autonomic nervous system).
so that is the clue to use

Hi Maly,
vegetative sphere is not a homoeopathic term, just a normal medical one.
The nervous system can be functionally divided into:
- voluntary (somativ) nervous system
- vegetative (autonomous) nervous system.
The latter dominates Sympathicus and Parasympathicus, those nerves
which regulate Heart beat, bronchii, peristalsis, thyroid secretions
etc.etc.
As for the organic substances:
Some remedies cause pains, sensations etc. - but aren't so prominently
known to influence the organic matter, causing changes there. Organic
matter are things you could touch, e.g.
You can#t touch pain, however.
Best,
Gaby

Re: Vegetative sphere??? The organic substance of the body???
Thank you Tanya, Teresa and Laurence. To summarize your answers:
The "vegetative sphere" must be the ANS and its related organs,
whereas "the organic substance of the body" would be the physical,
or as we term them "generals & particulars" as opposed to "mentals &
Emotionals" which constitute the Mind chapter?

Thank you Gaby. Your answer re organic substance differs from what I
gathered after receiving previous answers, but I assume that you are
familiar with those terms, as you are (if I remember correctly) one
of the voices in this list who advocate learning from the old books
