interesting problem

Post by Tanya Marquette »

this is strictly an academic question,
there is a man i know who submitted for an hip operation.
when he came out of it his vision began to disappear.
i understand that he can barely see anything. since
i dont have all the particulars, i cannot provide any
further description of the situation. i was told that he
came out of the operation and shortly after began to
lose vision with blurry spots which worsened till he
can see only gray blur at the moment.

has anyone had any experience with anything similar?
or know what might cause such a reaction?

Could be fat embolism in the retinal arteries, although it would be the
first case I ever heard about.
What does his fundus look like, if you have access to this information?

Hi Tanya,

a friend of my son's was almost totally paralyzed after a relatively
minor operation (appendicitis afair). The reason probably was that he
always needs a lot of anasthetics to be "kept under", so it was
probably the ansthesia part.

I should think that this was the problem in the case you describe
also. Afaik hip operations take along time - thus also long-time
ansthesia.

The good part of the story: the paralysis totally reversed gradually.

Regards

Luise
