Homoeopathy in Pakistan

Homoeopathy in Pakistan 06 November 2006
The devastation to homoeopathy in Pakistan has been brought by no one else than a government-sponsored body of homoeopaths known as national homeopathy council.

All the members of this council are supposed to be elected from among homoeopaths. These elections are nothing but a farce. I am yet to see a more rigged election than that of this council. The so-called elected members then elect a president. After this, a campaign of mud throwing and leg-pulling starts. Presidents are removed and reinstated. The only function this council has so for performed is to grant affiliation to homoeopathic medical colleges. This affiliation means a government-grant of tens of thousands of rupees for each college. Resultantly, with the exception of a very few, one can see a mushroom growth of such pseudo-colleges in the country. Most of these colleges are located in dilapidated buildings on off streets of every town without any educational facilities. Their teachers are generally the premeds of government-hospitals. During four years of schooling, the students are examined every year and they become homoeopathic doctors. These examinations are
most notorious for passing students through the meanest possible techniques.

The council should immediately be dissolved and an administrative body, headed by a known honest administrator, be created. This body should do only three things. First it must de-list all the colleges and stop their financial grant. Secondly, a minimum standard for colleges, teachers, syllabi and students be prescribed and thirdly the body should ensure that these standards are religiously adhered to.

If all this can be done, homoeopathy will flourish in Pakistan otherwise it is doomed.
