Let me try to put that issue at rest.......there are a few rules in using
combos, the proper way:
1. Combos are as individual as single remedies: this means that a
combination remedy must be prescribed individually for each patient
according to signs, symptoms, causality and repertorisation (yes you read
well, repertorisation).
This also means that OTC and industrial combos off the shelve are out,
unless you do not have anything else handy and the composition more or less
fits the case, which is very rare..........
2. Combos are used in lower potencies, under 30C, and as Chris pointed out,
are indicated in the symptomatic relief of physical situations, helping the
physiology to overcome a hurdle, but not solving deeper issues, emotional
and mental problems, past issues..... In those cases, the treatment must be
as accurate as possible and focus only on single remedies, even though we
might have to go through a series of them.
3. The less remedies in the combo, the better: they have to be chosen
properly in situations where no single remedy covers all aspects of the
complaints; many times and especially in acutes, it is very difficult to
decide what is the dominant or more important aspect of a complaint: the
bruising pain, the neuralgic pain, the amelioration by strong pressure while
being restless at the same time, the mechanism of the trauma, which involved
tissue is the more important.......the answer here for the patient is all of
the above.
Yes, ideally, you give the remedy that *seems to you* the most indicated,
observe, change.....you might spend hours doing that AND not provide
adequate relief, which is the most important point.
4. When creating a combo, you must know exactly what you expect from each
remedy and be able to justify/explain its inclusion, despite sometimes
apparent MM or modalities incompatibilities: it might seem absurd to combine
Rhus Tox and Bryonia because of their opposed modalities but it makes sense
if you look at different tissue tropisms involved and sometimes modalities
of each present at the same time.
5. Some situations will need the use of combos like for example epidemics
with 3-4 remedies in the genus epidemicus; if you want to do some prevention
by using the genus epidemicus, how do you choose your single remedy,
especially when there are no clusters of remedies? In that case you give ALL
the genus remedies together to everybody.
Another example would be remedies for seasickness: if you have the time to
determine exactly which one you need, fine, if you have to deal with a large
group, by the time you are finished with each of them, the cruise is over...
...
I hope this clarifies a bit the muddied waters...........
