Shannon and all,
I'm sure it was 40 IU, knowing how conventional medical/nutritional research
is often done. It is like the Vitamin C for cancer study Mayo did 15 or 20
years ago that showed the Vitamin C wasn't effective with cancer. They used
the Vitamin C RDA of 80 mg, which is just enough to keep you from displaying
clinical scurvy symptoms. That study was designed to fail and "prove" that
Vitamin C is ineffective with cancer.
The other thing about the Vitamin E study was that it didn't use natural
Vitamin E, the d-tocopherol. That substance the body is programmed to
metabolize.
The much cheaper synthetic Vitamin E, the dl-tocopherol, is NOT what the
body is designed to metabolize. So of course it will degrade the body's
functions, rather than enhance them.
So read the studies, as Steve S suggests, to decode the researchers biases
and shenanigans.
Blessings,
Marybeth

Donna, that's amazing!
On a slightly less amusing note I recall one which "proved" that
vitamin E does not prevent heart disease. The daily dose they used to
"prove" this was 40 IU. Could it have been a typo? I'd like to think
so, but who knows? And even 400IU is I believe only considered a
moderate dose. But to a casual reader (or someone who read only the
abstract; or someone unfamiliar with therapeutic dosages) I suppose it
would have looked convincing.

Thanks Marybeth,
Whether it's ignorance or agenda that designs those "studies", it's a
sad commentary. And these are the same folks who complain we haven't
"proved" our case!
Best wishes,
Shannon

i think the first example of 'science' in nutrition that i recall had to
do with Vitamin A. Vitamin therapy was beginning to make a
presence in our culture, late 1960's i think. The big pharma
research gave rats something like 250,000 mg synthetic vit a
daily till they got a reaction. even with the rats and the synthetic
drug, it took about 6 months to produce a negative effect. they
then used this study to reduce the allowable amount of natural
vitamin a and d. so at that time i was taking vit a & d in a 10:1 ratio
which is what was recommended. i could get vit a in 50,000 and
100,000 doses with the appropriate ratio of vit d. the amounts
were reduced to 10,000 vit a and 400 iu d. and it has not changed
since.
