Would any Australians (preferably in Brisbane) on the List know where I could obtain alcohol in the following grades for the preparation of remedies from raw materials according to Pharmacopoeia standards.
50% wt/vol
65% wt/vol
86-90% wt/vol
(I've already phoned around some pharmaceutical companies here without success.)

Many thanks,
Chris

I order my 99.5% ETOH from Biolab in Victoria - ph: 1300 390 917 - no
problems in freighting it to me here in NSW.

I know they make it in a range of percentages - also are very helpful.

Hello Chris,

I buy my ethanol from CSR Yarraville Distilleries (Vic). I've only
purchased their double distilled neutral 95% ethanol alc. but I'm
sure they'd have other dilutions. As a registered homoeopath in
Australia we are entitled to a quota of up to 60 litres/year. Had to
supply my TGA etc to be able to place an order. There was also a 20
litre minimum purchase and freight had to be made by someone who is
licenced to carry flammable goods!

CSR Distilleries Customer Service line: 03 9676 7220; toll free -
1800 819 618

I also have here a 2 litre bottle I bought once through my vet clinic
of ethanol 95% B.P. (pharmaceutical raw material). This was ordered
via a veterinary account/supplies but I'll give you the name of the
company and address on the label (see below) as it is in QLD so maybe
you can get from them direct? I'd be interested to learn of who you
do succeed with to add to my own files if you don't mind...espec if
in Brisbane as this would be closer fo me to order too.

David Craig Calenicals - Biotech PharmaceuticalsP/L; 100 Antimony St,
Carole Park, Qld 4300

Hope this helps.

Kind Regz,
Tan.

Chris - Had you thought of diluting the 95% to your specs?
The following is a simple method to dilute solutions that my husband
(the reference librarian) found for me off of an elephant health care
site (!!!) some time ago. In their example they were diluting an
iodine solution

A = Strength (%) of the solution to be diluted

B = Diluting solution (%)

S = Desired strength

Procedure:

1. S - B = X

2. A - S = Y

3. X parts A + Y parts B = S

Example: Dilute 95% to 65% alcohol

1. 65 0 = 65 (65% desired 0% = 65
2. 95 65 = 30 (95% alcohol 65% desired = 30
3. 65 parts 95% alcohol + 30 parts water = 65% solution

Say, 65ml 95% alcohol to 30ml water and you end up with 95ml (or
approximately 3oz in this *neck of the woods* - US) of a 65% alcohol
solution. Around here, you can pick up grain neutral spirits in any
old liquor store practically - that's really all I need for preserving
my homeopathic medicinal solutions and making the odd cordial or two,
where I was going for a 50% (or 100 proof!) solution... Hope this is
of use, Judith Mateo - Portland OR

While we are on the subject of alcohol, can anyone tell me if alcohol,
in different percentages, deteriorates? Does it remain stable
indefinitely if in an airtight container?

Why not diluting the 90% alcohol with distilled / deionised water to the required %?
Kind regards

No it would not deteriorate, but if not in an airtight container it will evaporate, the higher the % the quicker to evaporate. Of course the evaporation will depend on a number of factors including temperature and the higher the temperature the quicker it will evaporate. So the take home message, keep the alcohol just like remedies in a cool and dark place in an airtight container!

Hi Chris,

Thanks so much for giving the feedback! Did you try CSR
Distilleries...I am almost certain they have their alcohol in various
grades but perhaps just the same as Biolab!

Cheerz,
Tan.
