Bad study: they IRRADIATED the oils; there are cholesterol molecules in the sebum, so no wonder....................
Sorry to say this but this is an example of a bad research with the "results" repeated again and again, word of mouth, without verification and becoming a "truth".........................like advertisements and politics, when you repeat a lie enough times, it becomes a truth.....

Okay, so what is the oil formed on the skin from the sun and how does it get
transported to the layers that form/begin to form the Vit D?
Are you saying the sun does not cause or participate in causing the formation of pre-vitamin D on the skin?
If not then how does the sun penetrate the skin layers to begin to form the vitamin?

Sebaceous secretions, the same thing you find in sebaceous cysts but not as concentrated, in a liquid, oily form; it is the first fluid that comes out during a dry infra red sauna session.
The sun's UV get to the skin cells and triggers the transformation of cholesterol into cholecalciferol, which is then sent to the lungs for first hydroxylation, then the kidneys
For second hydroxylation.
In that sense, the skin is an endocrine organ; endocrine glands, by definition do not excrete their hormones/prohormones but secrete them in the blood stream.
OK????

what is the relation between the sebaceous secretions and cholesterol?
and are you saying that this secretion is never on the surface of the skin but close enough to the skin's
surface that it can be reached by the UV radiation?

Hi Dr. Roz,

Does this mean Vit D/D3 is a hormone?

You asked what the oily secretion on the skin is, I answered it is about the same substance that is found in sebaceous cysts, only there it is more concentrated, no relation with cholesterol.
The skin cells are hit by the UV; some of them create melanin, which gives you your suntan. Those are the melanocytes. Others do convert the cholesterol they take up from the blood into cholecalciferol, then secrete it into the bloodstream, in capillaries, from where it goes to the lungs, for their next transformation.
I do not think I could be clearer than that......

Yes, it is considered as a hormone.

I haven't been an active participant in this, but I have really appreciated your patience in explaining it all and am sure others have, too.

No, I had asked whether the secretions were on the surface of the skin or whether the UV frequencies penetrated the skin to
create the pre-hormone. That was not clear and still isn't. If the secretions are on the skin, they can be washed off. If the UV
works in cells below the skins surface, they cannot be. I thought my question was pretty simple and clear.
