Hi Luise,
I'm sure you have heard / read the occasional case wherein a remedy
leads to what we *call* suppression--the symptom disappears, but the
patient's overall state worsens? It is uncommon, but can happen if the
patient is not very strong or if the dosing is very aggressive.
Are you denying that this chain of events has ever happened, or are you
denying that it should be called suppression?

Hm, am I "exploring" overly trodden ground again? (I have not been
reading all posts thoroughly, so sorry if I'm asking for what you've
already given...)
That "chain of events" (symptom goes away, but patient's overall state
worsens) is what I was taught as the *definition* of the term
"suppression". Why do you feel it should not be called that, and what
do you feel it should be called instead?
Thanks,
Shannon

Well we shall call an educated opinion then, I do not care what you
call it Luise.
I have seen this in my practice - where some remedy given
continuously for sometime on pure pathological basis has caused
suppression; and sometimes a particular symptom goes away (for
example cough with homeopathic cough medicine) but causing headache
to increase) with intensification of another symptom.
I would call it suppression and for me it is a clinical fact...

Hi Shannon,
IF that happens and remains so, I should also call it suppression.
But we have no way of knowing whether indeed the OVERALL state has
worsened.
It is also often a matter of interpretation, by the therapist, by the
patient, by the patient's environment whether the overall state has
WORSENED.
Just give those 2 claims of mine a bit of thought. I
have thought about it a lot.
So far the examples of suppression I have read can be explained by one
or the other of my assertions or both.
As long as there are several different explanations of a phenomenon we
cannot say that one of them is a "known fact".
If once in a while it rains after an airplane flies through a cloud we
cannot consider it a known fact that an airplane's crossing a cloud
will cause rain.

Hi H.,
Educated opinion is very good.
Sure, it is your conviction - and stated as above I have no objection.

What do you think should happen before we call it a "fact" and not
an opinion or educated guess?

Hi H2,
A fact IMO is something that has been proven.
As long as in each experience of "so called" suppression other
explanations are possible and as long as they occur only sporadically,
they cannot be considered proven.
