[H] natural cold/flu remedies, was genus epidemicus- London Uk
My husband and I are just recuperating from cold/flu symptoms similar to
those that have been mentioned on Minutus recently. We are under
constitutional care and our homeopath believes that you have to sit little
things like this out (and it surely does work for me!) so no remedy. We did
use, with great success, a soothing drink suggested by one of my yoga
teachers. She said to put
a good many slices of ginger,
some turmeric,
a few cloves, and
some thyme [or the Indian equivalent of it if available]
in a pan, cover with water, and simmer for ½ hour. Then sweeten with honey
and sip the resulting liquid, thinned down with warm water as needed. That
has helped immensely. I believe the course of the illness has been shortened
without being short-circuited.
My husband also noticed a little article in the news magazine **The Week**
about using a spoonful of honey instead of any OTC cough syrup—not that we
would take OTC anything, of course. Anyway, the honey has worked like a
charm, even loosening mucus at first, IMO, as well as quieting cough at
night so one can sleep.
Also, I lived in Madagascar for 10 years and there we used fresh ginger
(grated, to tolerance) with hot water plus lemon juice and honey to make a
tea that cleared up coughs in a wondrous way. Teresa (Northern VA)

Dear Teresa,
I am a great believer in the powers of honey and always have Manuka
honey in the house.
Thanks for the recipe.
I suspect my friend is Nat Mur but she has always refused to see a
homeopath
I have a variety of remedies with me. We have arrived at the hotel
but they haven't yet!!
Happy New Year

Actually that is an interesting point, Luise. I bcc’d him on the post just to see if he has an opinion. I did not ask him since all the things on the list are in his (Pakistani) everyday food, except the honey. He might think we should not even use what he eats daily as cold “medicine,” though. If I should hear from him on it, I will let you know. t

All of those products are supportive of the body and the immune system, they should not be considered as "drugs" in the sense of substances doing the job instead of the normal physiology but as enhancers of said physiology.
With that view, they are certainly not "suppressive" or "toxic" and do not in any way contradict any of the tenets of homeopathy.

Thanks for the opinion, Dr. Roz. I surely do hope the “recipe” is supportive and not suppressive.
My yoga teacher first mentioned this tea to our class about three winters ago. At that moment I had had a lingering, unpleasant chest cold for about 6 weeks. I was under constitutional care with a different homeopath and was being very careful not to take any kind of medicine, thinking that the remedy I had been given would see me through the cold—actually now I wonder whether I was not stuck in a return of old symptoms since I used to smoke many years ago and get dreadful bronchitis/laryngitis and the chest cold was much like my former illnesses.
I’m not sure why I didn’t just ask that homeopath for specific help with the chest cold, but anyway, I was suffering in silence. As soon as Ravina mentioned the tea, I went home and made it and drank it frequently for two or three days. The cold vanished—and boy, was I thankful! I have used it occasionally since and am very glad to know about it. Teresa (Northern VA)

All the components are used in TCM as well as in Western Herbalism. I have studied both so I would/should know the energetics and the phytochemistry of those herbs.
None of them has any suppressive action whatsoever!
In almost 20 years of practice on non conventional medicine, I have never seen a herbs properly prescribed and taken cause any suppression. Never.

Re: [H] natural cold/flu remedies, was genus epidemicus- London Uk
Never say never again !!!
Remember our basis- Anything that is powerful to cure can also cause
a disease and vice versa. Our remedies cure a disease because of the
power to cause them- we do not end up with actual diseases only
because our provings do not go to that extent....
I have seen suppression in herbal remedies and also provings as well
if used constantly over a period of time-
In one case of arthritis the patient came out with eruptions after a
dose of Ruta- she said that looked exactly similar to eruptions she
had after centipede bite for which she used turmeric in sesame
oil... both used daily in Tamil cooking and part of the traditional
home remedies for bites...
In another case a patient had used Terminalia Chebula for a period
of years for relieving constipation; this is considered one of the
Kalpa medicines in Indian medicine( keeps one young and improving
the immunity stuff) and esp. good for intestinal health. He ended up
with Cancer in the colon. My strong suspicion is Terminalia Chebula
with its strong organ affinity causing problems there.
Many Indians chew betel ( Piper betle) leaves after dinner.Another
house-hold remedy. A couple of us got a bottle of its juice and took
10 drops for 2,3 days for 3 times daily. We started getting a sore
throat with itching of the palate. We then used it for cold with
palatal itching ( kind of like Penthorum) in low potencies with good
results.
These home remedies are harmless in the general scheme of things-
but with the right person/ right constitution and repeated over a
period of time - they will cause problem....
Even in traditional medicine these herbs /drugs are first
cleansed... there is a separate cleansing process for each of
these... for ginger you need to remove the skin or you soak them in
slaked lime... once treated like this many of their side-effects are
considered removed...when used for making medicines this cleansing
is considered important....

Interesting observations!
Why is one supposed to peel ginger? I never have--but unfortunately I
don't use fresh ginger as often as I'd wish.
But have often
seen that instruction, and wondered why.
