Re: Child who doesn't sleep
Thank you for sharing such interesting information about the Yellow Ladies'
Slipper! Interestingly, another member of this beautiful family of orchids,
Northern Lady's Slipper is a flower essence which invokes safety, nurturing
and aids sleep!
I have found three main themes with Cypripedium: one is children with
autistic tendencies/learning-behavioural disabilities who become
over-excitable and will not settle even when they are running on empty (and
their parents too!)
The second is children (and adults) who have a very active, vivid
imagination and tend to go to bed full of ideas and cannot "shut their brain
down".
The third is similar to the case you described: children who go to sleep
fine, then a couple of hours later they wake up for no apparent reason (no
nightmares, fears, illness, etc.) and won't go back to sleep.
I think the common thread in all the cases is some
excitability/over-activity of the mind, which does not necessarily have to
have its roots in fear or distress. There can be an element of intelligence
with an "edge" i.e. beyond the ordinary perception. The child may appear
older/wiser than its years. The "flavour" of the remedy is a "spark" of
some sort which can often times be seen in autistic children when you least
expect it.
Hope this is helpful - another thought that occurred to me, is to give the
kid some avena sativa in tincture form - if the parents feel she is not
eating enough... it is such a wonderful soothing supporting remedy!

Re: Child who doesn't sleep
Thanks for this Eleana. Although the parents didn't think the child ate well the child did not look underweight although at 16 months 22lbs is not a lot. I told the parents not to worry if the child didn't want to eat at mealtimes but not to offer anything inbetween. I explained how they were very quick to pick up when the parents are anxious!!
This was not an over excitable child that I saw- in fact she was quite Calc like although I didn't feel Calc/Calc Phos/Calc S fitted. I also felt that she was not "old" for her age in anyway.
Avena Sativa is a very safe herb but as I explained to Robyn I was taught not to give herbal tinctures to under 2 year olds. In case others don't know the amount of herbal tincture given to a person , unlike homeopathy, is related to their weight. A large man would be given more than a child.

Re: Child who doesn't sleep
Thanks Robyn. I was taught on my Herbal course not to give herbal tinctures
to infants under 2. What is your experience of this?
In this healthy looking child it is difficult to know what is the problem.
Carc came out well in my rep (no I wasn't using solely Murphy!!!!) but I
really couldn't justify giving it, although she does appear to be open to
the way Mother feels. Mag Mur was another I looked at but really couldn't
find much for children. I really don't think there is much wrong with the
child. This was not a Cham case. She is not teething at the moment. Mum
thinks there may be a problem when baby arrives if the child creates when
she, herself hugs her mother. I do feel that at 16 months she should be
speaking but I know that not all do.
As I said , a difficult one!!

Re: Child who doesn't sleep
Hi Rochelle,
One thing to consider might be allergies? Her restless nursing in the first
weeks and her sleep issues now could very well be due to irritation of
allergen(s)! What is she getting in her bottle, and have they tried
alternate formulas?
My one little remedy thought: The only definite symptoms seem to be
Frequent Waking (lots of remedies) and HEAD; PERSPIRATION; sleep; during:
bamb-a., bry., Calc., calc-p., cham., cic., hyper., kali-c., lyc., med.,
merc., podo., sanic., sep., sil., sulph., syc-co.
What about silica? Maybe she's just got "GENERALITIES; DEVELOPMENT
arrested; nutritional complaints, due to (12) : bac., bar-c., calc.,
calc-p., caust., kreos., lac-d., med., nat-m., pin-s., sil., thyr." and
"lack of grit" (physical)???

Re: Child who doesn't sleep
If a nosode appears strong in repping, that has to be
never let aside. It will act as a pace maker if not
the smm. The cold milk desire plus the night sweat,
kicking covers are strong indicators for Tub. Do not
bother if the tubercular history is not there. It
might be a latent miasm passed down. The present miasm
seems tub. Then take it out and see what comes next.

Cypripedium - It is called the 'happy pill' in some homeopathic quarters!

Dear Eleana,
What an interesting Rx . I have copied some of it below for others to read.
I am not sure if it could fit this case though. Under what circumstances
have you used it?
All the best

Re: Child who doesn't sleep
There still seem to be some unanswered areas.
What is the frenzy when she wakes all about, how does this actually present,
what is causing it and is it always soothed just by stroking the head. Is it
the dark, fear, pain, discomfort, noise - it needs to be explored. How near
are the parents, are they on the same floor in the house - things like that.
What kind of noises is she making, if not talking words. Is this important
to the case or parental worry? Has her hearing been tested in any way.
How hairy is the back?
Someone mentioned allergies and food - is the sleep related to this late
night drink.
Is she restless at other times? is there a smell to the sweat on head.
What are her eating habits - more detail needed is she is indeed
underweight.
Has she had any other acutes to date? That previous one she had with blue
arms and legs is significant imho. What caused this? Has her heart been
listened to?
The beta blockers might be active in this case, perhaps take the mum's case
(and Dad's case maybe) more fully. Why was the mum crying a lot?
I think I would delve a bit more before deciding on any remedy. Some
differentials are needed. Be a bit more curious.
There seems to be a lot around curiosity, stimulation, head touching,
jealousy??, skins, respiratory, sweat, restlessness, blueness of limbs
(overall a possible tubercular diathesis)
