I had an acute in today,a 55 yr. old active woman with an ankle pain (ache
or burning) that extends upwards > warmth
ankle pain
Re: ankle pain
Dear Rochelle,
Why is this an acute - did she sprain her ankle or ?
If you remember we had a discussion about Strontium Carb - excellent for
considering re hip replacement candidates - if and when the case fits - also
has an affinity with ankles. Have you also thought of Ruta which has similar
symptom picture as far as the lower limbs are concerned.
But don't forget that acutes have mental/emotional pictures as well - how
they are reacting to the said condition helps to differentiate between
remedies.
If it truly is an acute I would give a single dose of 30 and repeat only and
if necessary. If the pain is higher up the scale and she finds it more
intolerable then maybe 200 - the urgency of the case should suggest a
potency. But if it isn't an acute then the case needs to be opened up.
By the way regarding the recent discussion on Myopia - Ruta is a remedy
worth looking at.
Best wishes, Joy

Re: ankle pain
Dear Joy,
I think this is an acute because there is nothing else she is admitting that
is wrong with her. Strontium Carb was chosen because it has the pain
extending up the leg when she has been running around with her grandchildren
all day. I don't see the pain being that bad. She is just fed up that it has
gone on so long and the doctors haven't done anything except prescribe
ibuprofen gel which she has not used. IMO it is not a Ruta case because it
is < movement when it is there. Interestingly it was fine walking all
weekend after her daughter gave her Arnica to take. I have left some with
her to take while the remedy arrives. Maybe the Arnica will just sort it? Do
you have Asa Hershoff's book? On page 111 is the differentiation between
ankle remedies and her ankle fulfils all the keynotes there. She also talks
to me of a tension in her calves like a cramp which I think could be from
varicose veins. Looking at Ruta her ankle is not better walking or worse
first movement. Going to Strontium she talked of an itching and that she
sometimes doesn't feel well with it. It has swelling long after the sprain
(if there was one). To get the modalities out of her I had to get an ice
pack and a hot pack to see which she preferred!! Whatever, Strontium Carb
just felt right. I will order the 30 tomorrow.
What was interesting is when I asked her to tell me about security as I
wanted to see if her tidiness amounted to Arsenicum. She can't stand a mess.
I also asked about jealousy re Apis at one point and at the end of the
consultation she asked me why I had asked these questions as if there was an
indignation about me doing this. I reckon suspicious could be a rubric here.
Pity help me trying to get a constitutional remedy out of her. She should
know the score by now as I treat her husband, daughter and grandchildren!!
Regards
Rochelle

Re: ankle pain
Hi, Rochelle --
You might also consider Kali-c. if it fits her personality. I used it some years ago to cure a woman who'd been on crutches with a sprained ankle for three months. Nothing else touched it, but on Kali-c. she was off crutches within a few days.
