Maybe we should take our remedies in ghee.
Maybe we should take our remedies in ghee.
I took a Indian cooking class 35 years ago from someone who had learned
cooking from the Hindu wife of the pundit teaching meditation. I was told that
the medicinal substances of herbs comes out when cooked in ghee. I wondered
about the current use of turmeric pills, etc., especially since reading that
major stores in America are selling adulturated herbal supplements with
nothing of the herbal dna in them. Add that to this idea that something like
turmeric is supposedly useless as an anti-inflammatory unless cooked in
ghee..I did some research and came up with the site listed below. In this
article it says that the the ghee brings the herb to all the tissues. Is this
revolutionary? I don't know. Maybe all food or herbs eventually get to the
tissues. So after I ate the chocolate cake the other day and got a contractive
pain in my gut...I heated some good butter(not ghee) with some turmeric and
sipped about 4 teaspoons of it. I have to say the contractive pain pretty much
just went away...just like that. I used good pasture raised cows butter..I
don't know if that is what makes the difference. The cheap butter would bring
other junk to your tissues, I suppose. So that's it folks....I don't know what
this means in scientific language..brings to all the tissues as opposed (or
not) to what usually happens.

Turmeric is fat soluble, that is why it is absorbed well with fatty food, but very poorly if you just swallow the powder or an alcoholic extract.

Wow. Joe, what if you eat it raw or make a tea/tonic out of it... No, huh?

Some will get in but in very small dose, not what you need for a pharmacological action...that is why you always add it with fatty meals in Ayurvedic cooking, not only for the taste but for the medicinal power.

I should imagine this is also true of ginger, horseradish, galangal, ginseng, etc.... My own theory is that we are not well equipped to digest and utilize vegetable matter by itself in any case, and that fatty foods, oils, meat fat, etc. always help in the absorption.

Oh it is very useful especially in the gut.
But it does absorb better when dissolved in fat.

And I think that's why some ppl have a habit of
having some butter in their tea, herbal or what ever
It will make a richer taste

At least 50% of hours brains and our cells are fat. The people who invented fat phobia are extremely shallow people.

Carol,
I am pretty sure that you are right. Probably any healthy fat or oil would work. I am going to try it with coconut oil tomorrow morning. I am getting tired of paying good money for pills that are of only limited value. I have been trying to blend turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger into my smoothies.
If we buy turmeric or any other spice at the Indian grocery store and then prepare it as you suggest, we are paying MUCH less and saving lots of money. Unfortunately, my wife is sort of fat-phobic. She still thinks that Dr. Oz is the cat's meow. But I can at least stop paying for the pills for myself and accomplish two tasks at once: coconut oil and my spices.
I juice ginger, twice, and then soak the pulp over night and then squeeze the water out of the soaked pulp and use the water for my DIY ginger ale. The juiced ginger I keep in the refrigerator for up to perhaps a month; I have had no problem with it going bad. Which microbe in it's right mind would want to try to infect ginger juice. That would be like people from Philippines trying to invade Russia in late November.
I remember when studies started coming out about oats, and some business people started putting oats in pills, and people actually bought them. Even I then knew that there was something wrong with that. (:->)

Re: Maybe we should take our remedies in ghee.
So, I just had my brand spanking new, groovy fatty spices concoction: turmeric, my ginger juice, and cinnamon poured into melted butter. I stirred it around for a while and then let it sit for several minutes, and then poured it into my blending kefir smoothie.
Now we will see. But I believe in this enough so that I don't need any dramatic and observable benefits, like much better sleep or levitating (:->).
I will save the pills for those in my family unable or unwilling to eat/drink a fatty spices concoction.
