Organon - 6th edition - Aphorisms 2 - 5
Comments, ideas, questions?
1-5: Part of the Basic postulates about disease and what Healing is about.
§ 2
The highest ideal of cure is rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of the health, or removal and annihilation of the disease in its whole extent, in the shortest, most reliable, and most harmless way, on easily comprehensible principles.
§ 3
If the physician clearly perceives what is to be cured in diseases, that is to say, in every individual case of disease (knowledge of disease, indication), if he clearly perceives what is curative in medicines, that is to say, in each individual medicine (knowledge of medical powers), and if he knows how to adapt, according to clearly defined principles, what is curative in medicines to what he has discovered to be undoubtedly morbid in the patient, so that the recovery must ensue - to adapt it, as well in respect to the suitability of the medicine most appropriate according to its mode of action to the case before him (choice of the remedy, the medicine indicated), as also in respect to the exact mode of preparation and quantity of it required (proper dose), and the proper period for repeating the dose; - if, finally, he knows the obstacles to recovery in each case and is aware how to remove them, so that the restoration may be permanent, then he understands how to treat judiciously and rationally, and he is a true practitioner of the healing art.
§ 4
He is likewise a preserver of health if he knows the things that derange health and cause disease, and how to remove them from persons in health.
§ 5
Useful to the physician in assisting him to cure are the particulars of the most probable exciting cause of the acute disease, as also the most significant points in the whole history of the chronic disease, to enable him to discover its fundamental cause, which is generally due to a chronic miasm. In these investigations, the ascertainable physical constitution of the patient (especially when the disease is chronic), his moral and intellectual character, his occupation, mode of living and habits, his social and domestic relations, his age, sexual function, etc., are to be taken into consideration.

Re: Organon - 6th edition - Aphorisms 2 - 5
It clearly shows that H insists on knowing what is happening to the patient, understanding the disease and the patient in full, knowing and understanding the remedies, and getting down to the root of the problems....which links with our previous arguments and my previous post where I argued that in all cases we must push the consultation(s) a far as possible to get to the origin(s) of the dis-ease(s).
It is clear, it is plain....H never wrote that we should discard all knowledge and use only symptoms and signs without understanding why they are here, refer to my shortness of breath example. What he ranted against was useless theorizing without any basis, without foundations and especially without any practical use for treatment and cure.
BTW, Soroush, I am still waiting for an explanation of your post, which I read again and I do not understand what you mean (and I still have no problem discussing religion on a public forum....)

Hi Sheri,
There are some interesting, in depth, discussions on each aphorism on Lois's Hahnemaniacs (yahoo) list.

Yes, I know that - we talked about that when I started this and was going to also post what is there, but moving across country right now.
But really want some discussion here, for those interested.
But it seems that not many here want to think through them, themselves.
I was hoping to hear from more beginners here, but may be intimidated by others

I want to respond to keep the thread running even as I feel I have nothing worthwhile to add. This is probably what is hanging some of us up. I find this to be a very worthy project – even if we just review the aphorisms by reading them through again.
What really comes to mind for me is that Hahnemann was saying that we have to understand disease, the remedies, potency, repetition intervals, obstacles to cure ~ and then calls them easily comprehensible principles.
To be a true practitioner of the healing art is a high and noble call, “judicious and rational,” but easy?

Initial case taking takes me at least 90 minutes...I wonder how long it took our dear Dr. H? He must have had such a keen insight into human nature. The world would have been transformed if all allopaths took the time to understand/know their patients.
When I am working with 3 generations in one family, it certainly makes the case easier to see/understand what needs to be healed.
Dr. H's principles are comprehensible but being a homeopath is just hard work/constant study.

Re: Organon - 6th edition - Aphorisms 2 - 5
When I was a student someone told me that homeopathy was both an art and a science. David Little also said that.
My late husband was a fine artist. Yes, he had the creativity to think out the subject of a painting, but then he did the 'science' of balance, form, shape, etc. Once the mechanics were done, he could add the transportation media of colors, textures, etc.
Homeopathy is a science.
Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, etc, are essential to understanding what is going on. That is bodily function and non function, we need to know the 'mis-program or errors of thought and perception, we need to understand etiology, etc - Basically we are fact finding, trying to balance those fact and to find a totality that makes sense in the context of the patient. Those are the mechanics or the science.
The remedies are science also, we KNOW from the provings what those remedies can do. We need to employ the 'art' to see our patient in a clear enough light to understand how the patient's symptoms totality fits into those proving symptoms that can be part of the art as it takes a bit more than just words.
Then we need to find the best potency we can to match the energies and vital force of the patient.- more art??
No this is not easy!! As I tell my students we have a lot to understand and to balance and weigh before we are ready to just toss a remedy at someone. I do not think Hahnemann was saying the whole process was an easily comprehensible process - the easily comprehensible is the science part - Definitely not the ART part.
I believe if we can put the 'science' together, then we can rely on the art for help with the remedy match.
A well chosen remedy always looks 'easy' after the patient is greatly improved. That is because once our perception is validated we can see much more clearly through the accessory symptoms that were not important.
But it is clearly MUCH easier if the homeopath works systematically and thoroughly, we do need to know what needs to be cured in our patient. If we do not know what Needs to be Cured - how on earth are we going to cure it?
