narcissism

Post by Tanya Marquette »

This is a general question and no particular case is in question here.

I have been observing what seems to be an increasing rate of extreme narcissism in the US (cannot speak to other countries).
Am wondering is others here have looked at general etiologies or conditions for this psychological condition.
It almost seems to me so wide spread a cultural personality disorder that an remedy epidemics almost seems warranted.

Personally, I think it comes from excessive computer use, other technologies
and the complete disconnect from feelings. I met a guy about 18 years ago who
was so into computers but he didn't know how to talk to anyone(he was 19). I
heard later that he got heavily into drugs.I knew a little boy who was on the
computer since he was two and playing chess by 7 and he had severe behavior
problems in school...he was treated with homeopathy and it took a few years
but he is okay now.

was he unable to take criticism or being wrong? did he get angry when not getting his way or when criticized?
did he always blame someone or something else when he was not perfect?

I, too, have seen young people incapable of having real conversations with others as they only talk
technology language and seem to want to talk as fast as their computers work. I have no idea how they
understand each other, but they seem to do that. reminds me of working with guys who grunt at each
other all day but seem somehow to get the work done.

That plus most younger people have smartphones, iPhones and grow up making connections through them. I've noticed many don't speak on phones, only by texting.
Twitter encourages brevity as a tweet is only 140 characters which includes names you're sending to.
Social media is supposed to make us more connected but feels like it can lead to becoming more isolated.
I recently started using an Android phone and see how easy it is to become addicted. Apps for everything and you can live your life on it w/o physical interaction.
I went to a lecture by Gabriel Cousens, MD on health vegan lifestyle. Since he's a yogi, besides MD, it was held at a yoga school.
One of the points he discussed was too much computer use is harmful to ojas, kundalini spiritual energy, .

Says severe iodine and magnesium, B12 deficiencies in meat eaters and vegans.
Algae based DHA in high doses, carnoisine, B12, get Vitamin D levels to 80 ng/dl
He promotes high fat coconut, nuts, seeds, no grains/legumes.
No more than 25g fructose/day
Data shows little difference in illness outcome between those with total cholesterol 160 vs 260, statins BAD, higher chol better

He says chromosome 19 is key and need to know your genetics to be able to eat correctly.

It's been said that the rise in narcissistic types is a result of the "self-esteem" movement. You know, everyone is "special," no matter what they do (or don't do). There's no reality check from parents or school, because heaven forbid little Johnny's ego should be bruised.
It looks as if we're turning out a generation of preening cats. (With apologies to cat-lovers.)
Peace,
Dale

Are you saying that narcissism is due to nutritional deficiencies?

And that meat eaters are B12 deficient? Dont’ compute either of these points.

I agree some with this................in the US. But I would suggest it is more so here because of the heavy vaccinating in my opinion

Yes, my cats all had great sensitivity to each other and to people and were extremely loyal.

I think I approach this issue a little differently. I have thought the cultural pathology in the US was
Individualism (not individuality). Further, I think the self-esteem movement fed into the individualism which
was being promoted by upper class need to play the divide and conquer card as people became more
separated from the demands of conformity and McCarthyism.

The self-esteem movement seems to be another case of a good idea getting too extreme and going awry.

But what differentiates the pathological state of narcissism from run of the mill self-centeredness and
selfishness.

My kids were not that heavily vaccinated and my generation even less so but there is a high level of narcissism in both of
those generations. With the kids I raised my daughter is extremely narcissistic and one of the boy is somewhat so.
The others all have their ‘stuff’ but I wouldn’t call them narcissists in the clinical, pathological sense which is what interests me.

We can get into the whole social psychology of capitalism and how it affects people and their personality traits.
