A blender is highly recommended. I use kefir, but any liquid that does not taste bad will do. I use strawberries, but any fruit will do. I put the strawberries into the blender with the kefir and blend the heck out of it. Then I add a sweetener. A "smoothie" is more of a way of preparing food than it is just a single drink. I personally may include a little seaweed, gelatin, raw free range egg(s), melted butter, ginger juice, a few drops of an essential oil, anything that I deem health building and won't ruin the taste. The smoothie becomes a vehicle for drinking health building ingredients that I would not generally look forward to. I have found that if something does not taste good, eating it probably will not last. Plus, old people have problems with hydration, and this is just another way to get more H2O, and very underrated nutrient. Plus, the blender does a lot of work that I don't have to do. It is highly digestible. I still eat foods that require chewing, because I think that chewing is important. I often have about 3 cups of my smoothie per day, at one sitting, so it is one of my main meals. And it doesn't hurt that it is quick and easy to prepare.
