Aspartame is *formed from* an amino acid (anyone remember which?); but it is
*not* an amino acid.
At a molecular level small changes can have *big* effects!

Dipeptide = 2 amino acids combined by a peptide bond. This bond is formed by a
reaction between one part of one amino acid and a part of the other amino acid.

The ester is formed as the result of a reaction as well.

So, aspartic acid reacts with phenylalanine to form a dipeptide and aspartame
is a small part of this dipeptide.
