Fasting or any kind of detox for the late sixties (or older) crowd

Post by Carol Orr »

I have known several people who quit something cold turkey at this age or
older and ended up getting very sick. One man quit smoking and two weeks later
he had a stroke. Another quit smoking pot and got glaucoma two weeks later. So
whether it is dieting or quitting drugs or anything your body is used
to....please do it very very slowly. But you guys already know this, right?

It reminds me of a guy who had a volkswagon that had 500,000 miles on it....he
said his secret was to never let anyone else drive the car. Whenever I let
someone else drive my car...something always goes wrong within a week. They
drive it differently than I do. I think a person could live a nasty life of
bad food and drink and drugs and live to be very old...but if they stop when
they are older everything falls apart. Okay, I'm generalizing a bit....but I
think there is common sense in this idea.

Hi Carol,
Interesting analogies. Like to think that I take better care of myself and am in better condition than your car or your patients. But who knows. I will just stop if I feel uncomfortable. I am under no compulsion other than I paid already for a certain number of days. Tomorrow I will be cutting out all fish and eggs. Have not been eating meat. By Thursday, I will start on brown rice gruel. Then leave for the fasting center on Next Tuesday. That seems like a relatively slow way in. They will help control the way out. I think that more than the fasting itself, the way in and the way out are the places where you want to be slow and careful.
Best,
Ellen
