minerals again
Re: minerals again
I had read about a family that was trapped in the desert or something like
that...and the grandfather outlasted them all because he had always taken
mineral supplements. I think that was why I originally wanted to take minerals
in the nineties. In case I get stranded in the desert. My brother and I both
get muscle cramps in our legs periodically..he gets them more than me and
describes it as horrible. He read that he needs more potassium. Isn't there a
cell salt that can address this? Or does anyone know what he could be
missing in his diet.

Re: minerals again
Leg cramps is usually due to a lack of magnesium. The best oral form is Magnesium citrate. The best form over-all is via the transcutaneous application of magnesium chloride. Magnesium sulphate aka Epsom Salts is poorly absorbed. Use only the chloride for,
I bathe in it. I purchase 50 lb bags sold as an ice melter. I throw into my bath water about 2 handfuls and soak in it for a minimum of 1/2 hour. Soap will not work in this environment so clean your body first before adding in the magnesium chloride.
Yes, potassium is also required so that was good advice. Caveat Emptor! Carmi Hazen

Re: minerals again
I have always used leg cramps as a sign of calcium deficiency. Read
about this many years ago in Adele Davis and have used it ever since.
Magnesium is a big one, tho, today. Soils are so deficient now. Mag
has become the new Vit D3 in the US

Re: minerals again
Apropos soil deficiencies, have you read The Intelligent Gardener by Steve Solomon? It's a guide to remineralizing your soil to improve the nutrient density of your crops. Good old chicken manure doesn't quite do the trick.

Re: minerals again
No I have not read the Solomon book but thanks for the reference.
What I have started using for fertilizer is a product called Fertrell which
is supposed to be totally organic—no GMO residues in from animal poop!
It can also be formulated according to your specific needs. The organic
farmers around here have been using it and told me about it. They order
by the tractor trailer load early in Spring but I can get it from a local farm
supply outlet that delivers to my town once a month—convenient.

Re: minerals again
I believe that legs cramps are ALL about magnesium.

Re: minerals again
We use only our own manure from our organically-fed chickens and turkeys. But that doesn't replenish lost trace minerals. Fortunately, we can get greensand, kelp, rock phosphate, etc. through our organic farmers' association, NOFA.

I can get green sand, kelp and rock phosphate, too. Can pick up on local farm & garden supply places.
There is a big call for organics in my area so even relatively mainstream stores carry some.
Besides Fertrell, there is also a source in California that guarantees the organic condition of their
supplements. Cannot recall the name of the company right now but found them online and talked
at length with them.
But had one of the best gardens this summer using the Fertrell plus homeopathic remedies.
I realized this summer that my soil was too basic and will be adding pure sulphur to lower the pH.
Am hoping this will also change the environment for some of the buggers that have been plaguing me.
I, also, believe that it will make many of the minerals more easily available to the plants.

Re: minerals again
That can be potassium and/or magnesium. One "holds" onto the other to help retain it.
Cell salts do not supply minerals in the material amounts needed.
