totally Off topic - looking for a computer whizz!!!

Post by Rochelle »

Hi,

Is there anyone out there who can contact me off list and help me with a computer problem?

Have Win7 and although I can access my emails through Outlook and access Skype I can’t access any browsers and I haven’t a clue what to do. IE, Firefox and chrome won’t access any pages at all . They did 3 hours ago!! Have not got a virus – did a virus check with Avast. Tried turning laptop off and switching back on 3 times. Husband’s laptop can access browsers as can my smartphone!!
Thanks

if you still have the windows install disk you can use it to reload. i am not positive about that specific version but most now have the option to just re-install corupt files. you have to go into disk menu as the computer starts up where you have to hit one of the function keys, typically F12 or F10, but the start up will tell you what to hit for the boot up menu. then you have to change it to boot from cd drive. then put your win disk in and reboot. the win disk should ask you what you want to do. you might have to re-install everything but it can save all old files in a separate drive it will create for you.

Hi Rochelle
It sounds like a Trojan of some type. Avast is good but there are some Trojans that may not be detectable by that particular software.
Have you tried system restore?

I would do a total back up of all the files before doing what Vicki suggests.
But she reminds me that on my Windows 7 I have a feature that lets me restore to a previous point.
I go into Control Panel, and there is a feature called backup and restore. When you click on that,
it will take you to a page that lets you restore to a previous point, before the problem occurred.
It will not touch any of your files; it only reverts the programs. It will also undo any new programs
you installed or updates which may have caused your problems

this is a shareware ..I use it occationally.
I download it on my pc, run the search and
sometimes it detect some trojans or what ever
and destroys them.
Because I feel it slows down my pc, after that
I always remove the program.
Also CCleaner is good to run thru. it's free and
in some pcs it comes with the trashbin, I think.

Dear Y'all

I use Linux Mint 13 as my operating system. So I don't have any of these problems and my system works like homeopathy. And like homeopathy, it is limited. My only limitation is that I have to change operating systems when I want to print; I have to switch back to the accursed Windows 7. This takes many minutes and interrupts my reverie . Many Linux Mint people buy their printer to match the Linux Mint compatible printers. I am just waiting for my printer to die before I get a Linux Mint compatible printer. HP is one of the printers for which Linux Mint has software.

Also like homeopathy, finding the right remedy (or in this case, installing Linux Mint) can be hassle. But once it is installed it is smoother than a room full of butter and coconut oil on a warm day.

Anyway, my computer is actually up and running before I can get the ear-bud head phones into my ears. When turning off, my computer goes off before I can arouse my dogs and get up and start walking toward my next chore.

I have been using Linux Mint 13 for at least a year. I have no virus software because I don't need virus software. Other than the printer hassle, I have had no problems whatsoever. But the printer hassle saves me the cost of paper since I use the printer so infrequently.

Sincerely,

Roger Bird
