looking for a good, knowledgeable homeopath
Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for a homeopath who really is good and knowledgeable. I've had some not so good experiences with homeopaths in the past and wasted a lot of time and money. I live in California but distance is not an issue for me since for homeopathy you physically don't have to be present. I would appreciate any referrals; you may contact me off list as well if you prefer. Thank you very much.

Dear Anetaze,
Not everyone on a professional list will be 'good and knowledgeable', but people on a professional list will be properly trained. Unfortunately in the United States there are still people who will start to practice who are not properly trained, and most likely this is why you have had less than satisfactory results.
Also, it is best if you are present, there is so much more information that can be had by actually seeing and talking to a person, distance can be a problem.
Now, I understand that it is not always necessary to be there, however it does take twice as long in my opinion to do this by distance, even with skype and multiple emails back and forth.
Next you MUST find a homeopath you can feel comfortable talking to. Interview them, don't just take a name on a list and think you will resonate with them because they are famous, well known or highly recommended (all of that helps, but it is not infallable).
For the USA, look at the CHC list (Council for Homeopathic Certification or the NASH (North American Society of Homeopaths) to start. Do not feel shy to ask for a telephone discussion about how they work, their fees, and your concerns.
Do NOT settle for someone who is giving you multiple remedies in one bottle! This is not the way most of us practice, most more 'classical/clinical' homeopaths are looking for one good remedy for our clients. And, yes there are times when more than one remedy may be needed for shock or trauma, one sided diseases, acutes, etc, but as a rule we like ONE good remedy.
We may support that remedy with Bach Flower therapy, with tissue salts or nutrition and that depends on your problem.
Do find someone you can speak freely to, a patient or client that feels their homeopath doesn't need to know certain information is setting themselves up for failure. We who have been practicing for awhile have heard it all, we would not be effective homeopaths if we judged people for what they say in our office.
I wish you the best in finding a homeopath that suits your needs.
Warmly, Maria

Re: looking for a good, knowledgeable homeopath
don’t know that I agree about the CCH as a standard for excellence. my experience
is that even with good, solid training, practitioners often miss the mark with a client.
my own personal case is one on point where some well renouned practitioner/educators
took my case and failed to get to core issues.
I have always felt that healing is more art than science. If a practitioner does not
connect with the energy of the person, they wind up working in a mechanical way and
that often does not get to where one needs to go in a case. And I would say that about
conventional medical practitioners as well, altho that system metes out remedies in a
much more standardized manner. Just look at the 100,000’s of deaths anually from legally
applied tests and medicines with so many missed dx.

Re: looking for a good, knowledgeable homeopath
Yes, I understand your position.
That said let me relate a story to you.
My husband was an fine artist, he painted pictures and when I first met him he had a lot of abstracts, and frankly with my untrained eye in those days it looked a bit suspect. One day i was paging through his sketch book and saw a picture of his dog curled up on a rug. Oh, I exclaimed, there is the dog! And it looked exactly like his dog. That was the first realism I had seen of his work. I made a comment on it, and he said, Maria the ability to sketch my dog and make it look real is what proves to the art community I am an artist, anyone can do abstracts and anyone can draw pictures they call art, the ability to master your trade, art in his case, is what gave him a title of being an artist and he could freely engage his art whichever way he wanted.
So, yes I agree with you that all CHC certified people will not be great homeopaths, certification does not guarantee quality, but it does mean they have mastered their homeopathic studies, how good they become as homeopaths will be up to their own abilities and focus and their ability to understand and work out cases.
Does it mean they can work for you? Maybe not, but you have a much better chance if you go from the professional list and start searching there. This is why I said to interview a potential homeopath first, you must feel comfortable and that you are on the same page.
Can you have a good homeopath without credentials? Sure, but where do you start looking? And what professional organization will stand behind them? And who vets them out to be sure they are trained in all aspects of homeopathy?
Warmly, Maria

Re: looking for a good, knowledgeable homeopath
I'd look for the REAL credentials of a prospective homeopath.
- degree from the place where they studied full time for YEARS.
I'd be more interested in where they studied and for how long than in any of the various places making money dishing out certificates but not doing any of the teaching.
- FInd out who were the homeopaths tutors and what their reputation is.
- Word of mouth recommendation from someone else who used them as a homeopath.
Here's one place to start a search for homeopaths in USA/Canada, and it gives names and emails to look into, so you can write and ask questions (Steve Waldstein's list):

I agree Leilanae,
But what about the person who starts taking the courses, never finishes them and then says they are a homeopath.
One student we had said she had been practicing for 6 years, this person did 3 lessons of a 3 year program of studies.
The professional organizations world wide (India, Europe, Canada, South America - and now the USA all want 500 hours of homeo studies and at least 500 hours of clinical training plus the health sciences. Many people are out there practicing without that kind of training and without finishing their formal education.
One person, who practices told me, "I don't have to study the Human Health Sciences, I am a homeopath and all I need to know is the subjective symptoms of the patient." (Dr. Roz put that issue to bed with his excellent comments on why homeopaths needed to understand these sciences.)
When someone tells you they are practicing, demand to know their background.
Warmly, Maria

Hi Maria,
I guess there are always going to be "what abouts".
The examples you mention regarding the level of education can easily be checked by contacting the college/university/ or business DBA as a school.
I live in a "Health Freedom State" and am required by law, to provide my educational background to prospective clients.

Luc de Schepper, the best homeopath in the US imho, has retired a couple of years ago and left his practice to one of his former students. I'd trust his judgement. http://drluc.com/
Re: looking for a good, knowledgeable homeopath
Hi Everyone again,
I thank you all for your responses and I'd like to give you some history of my situation.
I saw and spoke with many different homeopaths all of whom were certified, educated in homeopathy, and had great resumes. I saw each of them (not at the same time) for at least 6 months and longer but no improvement in condition was felt or seen. I will not name names but will give you briefly some of their credentials:
-one has a school of their own and studied under a well known homeopath; one is an MD and homeopath and writer; a couple homeopaths and PhDs seemed extremely qualified and even have their own product lines sold at stores; there was a homeopath who was also Oriental Medicine doctor and acupuncturist too.
I was truly losing faith in homeopathy at this time. However, I also had a puppy I was experiencing problems with so concurrently I was trying to find a good homeopathic vet to consult with. I discovered Glen Dupree. I started with Glen working on puppy issues. As he helped me with the pup I asked Glen (actually begged) if he could help with issues concerning my daughter and myself and he kindly and graciously agreed. Within weeks/months deterioration of health issues stopped and signs of improvement were felt and seen. I was with Glen for about 3 years until he passed recently. I've never met a more remarkable, kind, hard working, generous, human being in my life. I was blessed by God to know him and I miss him dearly. He helped me tremendously with all my family members even though he was a DVM/homeopath.
He started working with my daughter on a new health development before his death and now I'd like to find someone who can continue helping me out. Hence my request here.
I can't afford to waste tons of money and time going through what I went through before. And I learned that education and certification is not a basis on which I can rely on, unfortunately. Personal experience is best so that's what I was hoping to find here.
Thank you for your time.
