Hi Didi and All,
Would you know what may help with scalp seborrhea? This is where there are hard crust and scab formations on scalp, scaly not flaky like dandruff
Researchers say it is from a specific yeast Malassezia that lives on scalp, may increase sebum production. There is an antifungal shampoo, Ciclopirox made just for this yeast and condition but it doesn't eliminate the condition, considered incurable, and has to be carefully used as it may cause cancer. Instructions say only use for 3 minutes twice a week max. It is also very expensive as brand drug prescription, Loprox,, over $400 and is now available as a generic drug for about $100 w/o insurance.
I've found zinc pyrthione 1% shampoo like Head and Shoulders works OK and their H&S Sensitive with aloe vera works even better but now it is only offered as a combo 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner, no longer shampoo alone. H&S has an extra strength 2% zinc pyrthione shampoo but it leaves the scalp very dry.
I've found geranium oil in shampoo helps, geranium oil also repels bedbugs.
Hemp oil helps by making the crusts smaller and forms easy to pick small dry ones.
In my case I think it got worse over time as my diabetes did and blood sugar rose above normal though the research says this yeast is more related to fat consumption. I've found the scalp better when strictly eating the no carb, Atkins diet though not sure if saturated fats like butter make any difference .
Alaffia brand African neem oil with shea butter and tea tree oil shampoo helps some. I've read in Europe there is lithium succinate shampoo for this, I tried adding lithium carbonate to shampoo but it was too drying.
One homeopath repped Petroleum for this and my overall issues which I tried but I felt very odd on the mental side, maybe like someone who works with petroleum might feel from the fumes, so had to stop it.
I recently saw an essential oil formula for general scalp tonic with sandalwood, cedarwood, oregano, euclyptus, peppermint to be mixed in witch hazel. I combined some Alaffia shampoo with Dermarest Psoriasis shampoo, which has the zinc pyrthione and salicyclic acid, used for antifungal among other things, with the above essential oils. It helped great initially now much less so.
I generally feel noticeablly better after shampooing for this condiion which leads me to believe this yeast is systemic. Since the crusts when picked can be bloody, I would guess the yeast is circulating in the bloodstream. I've tried taking extra zinc supplements thinking an increase in zinc blood level might help. I thought maybe extra oils like flax, virgin, black currant seed, etc might help. I also have vastly increased probiotic intake sometimes over 40 billion count per day hoping that may help crowd out the yeast.
With all scientific advances along with herbal and homeopathic knowledge, is there any way this can be cured???
Everything I mentioned above helps but if you skip a day or two, then it worsens again.
Would topical Arnica help?
