Isn't the texture quite woody? Maybe that depends on the type of rose? I have tried checking them earlier in the season, but even then there did not seem to be much "fruit"…

I just eat ripe red hips straight off the bush.

The hip is the fruit of the rose (sort of a hard, dry berry-like thing), and easiest way to prepare it would be as tea. I don't know about the rest, tho. Shannon
Along this line, does anyone know how the prepare rose hips for the vit C. I have read, these are some of the best sources for vit c complex that is needed, more that just the isolated vit c typically sold. When do you harvest, what part is used and how to prepare and typical daily dosing??

Yes, it is excellent. I have passed it around to many people and groups.
Relative to this discussion, many supplements are made from GMO corn.
Most Vit C for example is from GMO corn. It pays to take some time to call

the mftr before buying supplements to see what they are using.
There is a chemist, Dr. Judd, who has an extensive website on dealing with teeth health.

Magnesium is one supplement that he recommends strongly, along with Vit C.

He suggests a product that is free from all additives (sounds good, huh?) and it is

cheap. A call to the company told me that they got it from China and that it was

GMO free, but they did not test it. They are relying on govt inspectors who do not

do any testing. We know that the number of inspectors was never sufficient, and

with cut backs is even lower. I did not buy from them, but did get Mag citrate from

Solgar even tho is had fillers.

There seems to be growing interest in Magnesium. As with Vit D, tests are

showing major deficiencies in the American public due to soil depletion and

rotten eating habits.
What about magnesium citrate as a form of Mag supplement?
I would also look at taking a probiotic supplement and paying attention

to diet in this regard. Fermented foods (real organic soy sauce, cidar vinegar,

pickles, yogurt, etc) are good sources for building probiotics.
Also, need to become more conscious of GMO in foods as they will destroy

the good gut bacteria and show to have destructive impact on digestion and

intestinal wall integrity.

Do you peel off the leafy bud covering the hip first or just dry out the whole thing? Do you wait till its browning on the plant like I do when I collect seeds?

Shannon - The research studies indicate that Magnesium chloride works to help cronic illness and other forms do not. They supply magnesium in a general way but for as yet unknnown reaons (per the research doctor wo wrote to me form Italy when I asked about t) ther Mag chloride has some deeper healing effect that other forms lack.

I know for myself - I have an inherited kidney switch gene issue that means I lose magnesium fast and must take huge amounts daily. I can NOT manage on anything other than Magnesium chloride. It will keep me alive if I use citrate etc temporarily, but my muscles and nerves will not work properly (including the heart muscle and nerves). So I can only say I also see what is meant by Mag chloride being somehow much better for the body - also do not know why/how.

When I've been out of the Mg chloride and forced to use something else, my 2nd best is magnesium gluconate but you need to use tons of it as a 500mg tablet only has 30mg of actual Mg - and third choice is citrate. (LAST choice oxide, bleach!)

Gluconate advantage: absorbs in 1 hour - (helps fast)
Gluconate disadvantage: absorbs in 1 hour - (no longterm effect.)
All other forms absorb in about 8 hrs.

Namaste,
Irene

That is true. It is also the ONLY magnesium chloride product allowed in USA by the FDA, period.
It has some calcium, required there by our "all knowing" FDA.
It's not enough calcium to cause a hassle.
It's just SO irritating that the FDA has to be such a know-all. For example, my own need for magnesium is very great, (36 tabs a day) and I do NOT need all the calcium which I'm forced to also swallow "because the FDA knows best".

Magnesium chloride is extremely hygroscopic (Absorbs water from the air). The local compounding pharmacy has yet to find a way to get me some (without calcium), although it is used by the thousands of pounds/gallons here in winter as a road de-icer! Maybe I need to hitch my wheelchair behind the de-ice truck and hold out a bucket......

The SlowMag or Mag 64 or MagDelay versions (all identical) all have enteric coating - which helps absorption - it is NOT well absorbed after stomach acid gets to it - and which also provides air-moisture-proofing to avoid hygroscopic reactions before you even take the tablets.
You'd need twice as much Magnesium chloride, if you used a non-coated version.

What I do to avoid the calcium and get maximum magnesium is to take the magnesium WITHOUT fat - just with fatfree liquids, between meals - and the meals can all have fat. The reason is that magnesium absorption is reduced in presence of fat and calcium absorption is increased with fat and reduced with no fat.
SO if you want to absorb calcium - take it with fat, and if you want to absorb magnesium (and skip the calcium in the SlowMag) then take it without fat.

There are good reasons that nature does NOT supply calcium and magnesium in the same food. Calcium comes with the fat needed to absorb it - in milk and cheese for example.
Magnesium comes without fat to ensure good absorption - in spinach and dandelions for example.

It's just the all-knowing FDA who doesn't yet know what was common knowledge in 1950.

Namaste,
Irene

The body uses twice as much calcium as magnesium, and twice as much phosphorus as calcium.
SO:
4 parts phosphorus
2 parts calcium
1 part magnesium

So a "normal" calmag supplement should have twice the calcium compared to magnesium.
(We get huge amounts of phosphorus usually in a diet, so it is not normally supplemented.)
Slowmag/Mag-SR/Mag64/Magdelay/etc has 106 to 112mg Ca and 64mg Mg per tablet....Just take it minus fat.
Or get Magnesium chloride hexahydrate from a compounding pharmacy. (Some states need a Rx!)
