Re: dog an excessive itching
I’d like to add a comment about Taste of the Wild. It is made by Diamond... I live just 35 miles from one of its plants, and this company has had many recalls, and paid many fines over aflatoxin and other molds in their corn and other ingredients. It is often implicated in canine skin conditions – so just removing that “obstacle to cure” may take care of 90% of the problem. And then you can take the dog’s full case!

Re: dog an excessive itching
Hi,
Excessive scratching and biting can have several causes, such as:
* The diet, as others have indicated already: I've seen major improvements in several guest dogs just after changing from a low grade dry dog food diet to a high grade one. But, the best results I've seen in dogs that switched to a raw food diet (=species appropriate diet). In principle you don't need to add any supplement to a raw food diet.
* vaccine side-effect: excessive scratching and biting is one of the Rabies vaccine side-effects.
* sarcoptic mange (scabies)
* Malassezia http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/s ... course.htm
* I believe that a slow working thyroid also can be a cause of excessive scratching and biting.
My late GSD also was continuously biting and scratching. So badly that often the skin was raw, oozing, balding over his whole body, it thickened on many places, became dark grey, bad body odor, excessive wax in ears.
Several vets diagnosis: demodectic mange with secondary bacterial infection, sarcoptic mange, malassezia, allergies, and a few more.
None of their treatments worked.
Then finally at the (his) age of 7, I came in contact with a veterinary homeopath over the internet. Based on his totality of sx she prescribed a remedy (in his case it was Lyc. C30). Within a day the itch went noticeably down, 3 days later I saw the hair growing back, 7 days later there was a tiny layer of hair all over his ears and body (that went really fast!) and about 10 days later he got full bloat and died.
((
I asked later to other homeopaths if this could have been an aggravation, and the answer was "possible'. Major bummer, who could have expected that! I mean so sudden and so severe.
Before my GSD came to me he had his puppy shots at about 6, 8 and 10 weeks of age (all combined vaccines) and a Rabies one. Somewhere around his puberty his skin problems started. His thyroid tests all came back within normal range, and thus the thyroid was okay according to the vet. However, when you took the average of the normal ranges, then all test were below that. According to Dr. Jean Dodds, world renowned specialist in canine thyroids, this means an impaired thyroid. Hence me now thinking his problems were a result of his puppy shots that messed up his thyroid, and as a result of that his other health problems occurred.
Of course I can be wrong about this. I'll never know for sure probably. But I do know that a dry dog food or rice diet would give an increase in the itching, and a grain free raw food diet a slight decrease. But correcting only the maintaining causes did not do the trick with him, and a full homeopathic consult and treatment was needed in order to help him.
With other dogs just only correction in one of the maintaining causes was needed, that is a switch towards a grain-free raw food diet already did wonders. And I've seen dogs improve on only supplementing with omega 3.

I know of many dogs who were switched from kibble to a raw food diet and their scratching, licking and "allergies" went away. I would think that would be the first step to consider.

Hello,
I am just going to repost something here that I answered with on a dog group, so some of it may seem elementary to the homeopaths, but it saves time for me to do it this way:
There is a very simple to make homeopathic lotion that works wonders on allergic skin reactions. My neighbors all keep coming to me for refills every year. I don't sell it, I just give it to them. Very easy to make, and it's cheap. They just bring me clean bottles to put it in.
Here is how it's made :
Get a clean, new, 2 to 8 oz. spray bottle.
Make sure it's a sprayer that mists too, if possible.
Fill it with clean spring water.
For every two ounces of water, add 5 drops of Calendula Mother Tincture (a brownish liquid).
Whenever he starts scratching (and only when he starts scratching - this is a remedy, not a preventative) mist a little on the spot he's scratching. A little goes a long way. No need to drench it.
Before you mist it on, take the bottle (securely closed) and whap the bottom of the bottle hard against the palm of your opposite hand six times. This activates the remedy properly.
If your dog has chewed some spots raw, trim the hair away from on and around the raw area and wash it with a mild bar soap (not antibacterial soap) and water. Rinse it well. No alcohol, no iodine, no antibacterials at all. Pat the area dry with a clean soft towel. Then mist the Calendula lotion you have prepared onto the area lightly. Let it air dry and don't let your dog lick it while it's wet. Repeat only when he seems to be itchy again.
I hope this helps.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for all the wonderful info and insight. A great discussion also.
I started him on a detoxify and a raw diet; transitioned slowly. Also gave 30c of sulfur.
Also stopped the allopathic meds. And he has greatly improved. Just having these bouts/episodes of scratching for about 5-10 minutes then stops. he is energetic but sleeping more over all.
Thanks so much!!!

Hi Is sleeping alot more than usual, but awakes with lots of energy and walks on the leash with alot of pep!!
He does still have these bouts of scratching about 2-3 x a day; but that is the only times he is scratching. They last about 5-10 ins.
I am still giving him the detox and feed the "raw food" he loves that
Thoughts.
And thank you everyone!

Kibble for dogs is like feeding all the gmo, cheap packaged food to kids.
There is nothing good about it. Particularly the grain in these foods which
is clearly not a species recommended food. And it causes all kinds of health problems

Re: dog an excessive itching
Hi,
Just on the diet section i would like to add a couple of things. I agree that raw food diet is the best thing for a dog but plain meat is not enough. Dogs are not carnivores to the extent cats are and need a small amount of other things as well. You can add lots of things such as (depending on size) finely cut greens, olive oil and especially sea weed amongst others. Also the meat should be given in small cut pieces and not minced.
There are many books out there about raw food diet but my personal best is by Juliette de Bairacly Levy "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat". One of the main things she suggests, besides raw meat diet is that sick animals should fast before anything!!! I have found this to be true with mine.
If you think that raw food is too much hustle you can also consider to alternate or swap it for good dried foods that have up to 80% and 70% meat. Some of the best (not the only ones) are Acana and even better Orijen. They are also grain free and have really good selection with great ingredients. They are a bit pricey though. IPeople with sensitive pets have found these very helpful. They are a bit pricey though. I just thought of giving you another option as a good alternative.
Sorry for getting too much into it in a homeopathic site but i thought it was important to clarify a couple of things...
)
Good Luck
