alcoholism etc. question

Post by Shannon Nelson »

I wonder if anyone has thoughts about what I might expect, in terms of
results or likely obstacles, in this case?
I am getting ready to take a remedy to an elderly friend. He's had
remedies in the past, but none have done much for him. Now I *think*
the remedy has become clear (veratrum) -- but the situation has become
much more difficult.

He is about 84, was in good health until rather recently, but now
appears increasingly frail. (Medical tests put him in a reasonably
healthy range despite weight loss, alcoholism, and etc.)

His main problems seem to stem directly from his increasing alcoholism
-- memory,
balance, appetite (skinny and losing weight), and increasingly erratic
and inappropriate behavior.

He has "always" been a regular drinker (martinis); very successful in
his career.
But since his wife's long illness and eventual death last year, his
drinking has increased and his health is going down rapidly.

He admits to "mild depression".

He recognizes that he needs help, and is asking for it. (Within the
limits of his increasingly lousy memory, he is making efforts with
food intake, vitamins, and to some degree regulating his alcohol
intake, but not nearly enough IMO.

He has been in deep denial on the question of his alcoholism, but
appears to be reluctantly accepting counsel that yes, it IS a problem,
and is making some (useful tho insufficient) effort to reduce drinking.
-------------------

My questions:

I would *like* for the first move to be for him to stop all drinking
-- but we are told this would not be safe unless he were in a
supervised detox situation, so for now we are just urging him to
reduce, and trying to make him aware of his behavior changes, and
other consequences.

My plan is to give the remedy in 200c, single dose in water, with
follow-up doses of 6c (and also 200c) to hold unless needed. My
reason for beginning with high potency is that he will not remember to
take anything daily! At least not in the beginning. Does this seem a
reasonable potency for the situation?

The 6c would be both in case of aggravation, and in case remedy is
successful but needs extra support for times of extra stress.

We will be continuing efforts with nutrition as well.

Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks,
Shannon

I feel 'alcoholism' cannot be used as a single symptom. It's an easy way
out for various underlying issues. These issues should point the way to
the choice of the remedy. Alcoholism - why?

Hennie, the term did not even figure into my analysis! So be at peace... :-)
I use the term in description, because he:

(a) has about 6 martinis a day, every day; and
(b) usually has one in his hand, or close by; and
(c) gets visibly drunk on too many occasions -- which he *never* used to do.

And it will complicate and perhaps limit his recovery; I would love to hear what others' experiences might have been, in treating people in this sort of situation. (Elderly and reasonably "high functioning," but still a bit clueless, alcoholics.)

I hadn't tried to give the whole case, but would be happy to...

Thanks,
Shannon

Hi Shannon,

There is some interesting research on glucose levels in alcoholism. Might explain some of the symptoms you listed?

Where Can I view that article on glucose levels in alcohol drinkers, Leilanae?

Hi Leilanae!

The connection between alcoholism and hypoglycemia? Yes, we're working that angle too. I think the bigger connection is with vit B1, which is (I read) massively depleted by alcohol overconsumption (as are other nutrients), and his list of main complaints reads like a laundry list of B1 deficiency symptoms.

When he remembers to take his vits (which include huge amts of B1) he does very noticeably better *and* is more able to remember to take them. It's circular... And difficult since he does not have anyone there daily to help!

But some of the sxs are simply of (what appears to me to be) veratrum, which I am not guessing was likely his lifetime rx...

Eating regular, high-protein meals and avoiding sugars etc. is another part of what we are working with him on.

Thanks,
Shannon

have you thought of a juicing cleanse, say 7 to 21 days with aloe and/or soaked chia seed to help detox liver and possible coffee enemas if needed if liver is highly toxic. could help reset system to allow for better absorption of vitamins.

Great idea, but not feasible right now.

We would like to get him to a detox, holistic or otherwise, but will begin with what we can do now. I'm hoping the remedy will help; would prefer to start with low daily doses--but also not feasible right now.

I'd love to get some juices and chia into him...

Hi Shannon!

Both hyperglycemia (shortly after intake) and hypoglycemia (6 to 35 hours after intake). In SOME people this MAY have something to do with the addictive "chasing the high".

Good luck with this case, it looks like you have a lot of bases covered.

"chase the high" and not just "avoiding the low"? Does high blood sugar actually feel *good*? I guess I don't know much about that end of it.
