§ 9
"In the healthy condition of man, the spiritual vital force (autocracy), the dynamis that animates the material body (organism), rules with unbounded sway, and retains all the parts of the organism in admirable, harmonious, vital operation, as regards both sensations and functions, so that our indwelling, reason-gifted mind can freely employ this living, healthy instrument for the higher purpose of our existence."
Any one care to discuss what the higher purpose of our existence might be?

Re: Aph 9
Great Aphorism from H.
Stating "mind can freely employ this living, healthy instrument for the higher purpose of our existence". Countless Books/theories have been written on this alone. Interesting that H uses the term employ" meaning a separation or something distinct from the body. H alleges that there is a Higher purpose to life. This means many things to many people. Here is my take.
The higher purpose in life might be to learn lessons. To understand our goal on earth. To use the physical body as an instrument to learn Lessons and the nature of our soul and consciousness. To learn to balance the ego. To learn the lessons of Love. To Learn the Nature of God. To learn the Nature of the Mother Earth. To remember who we are before you enter the body, and to remember that you incarnate again to learn lessons etc. To learn our connectedness to all people/animals/plants etc on earth. To learn our place on the spider web of life. To learn to Love another as you Love yourself in perfect balance so that you are neither too selfish nor too selfless. Balance=Health. I guess you know where I am coming from

Re: Aph 9
Hahnemann didn't use the word "employ" that was a translated interpretation. You would have to go to the original German language version to find the actual word used which may have more than one translation and decide on the context. Too bad Luise isn't around, would make this easier.
For example, here's a translation interpretation of Aph 9 that doesn't use the word employ.

Re: Aph 9
Our spiritual side?? Our relationship with God? Or even helping others before ourselves? Just immediate thoughts that came into my mind……..

Soroush , All,
This aphorism has to be dealt with at individual word level. My perception of an aphorism is like a formula.
This needs a little background explanation. In ancient India, five thousand years back, we had voluminous works simply passed to the next traditions simply orally. The people had such memory. Then, when the way of living changed, memory became shortlived. It was then that (3000 years back ), these volumes were made into formulas (or sutra ) for easy memory. They live even today. But only the traditional gurus can interpret them in depth. Each sutra can be lengthened to almost a volume.
This is also one like that. I have my own understanding of this but will wait for many others to put their understanding of this. Perhaps homeopathy was the first European/ western medical doctrine that emplys the word 'higher purpose ' apart from Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani systems. In India , everything is pivoted on the spiritual aspect. Ayurveda is a upaveda ( a subsidiary Divine document) . May be the Mayans also had one given their similarities with the Hindu culture . Columbus & Co., ensured none of their genius would reach the outer world.
Dwell on this aspect : How vital force is employed by the reason gifted mind---
You can also add a little Darwin into the curry.

Re: Aph 9
Hi, Susan --
This same "translation" refers, in § 269, to "The discovery of radium", "the electron", and "Radioactive substances", none of which concepts could possibly have been expressed in any language in 1842. So it's a very free "translation", liberally interpreting Hahnemann through modern concepts, and can't be relied upon to convey Hahnemann's sense of what he meant by what he said; only to give this interpreter's sense of what Hahnemann meant.
The concept that is probably more important than the exact meaning of the word translated as "employ" is the separation of mind and body. But I don't think Hahnemann meant even that to take precedence over the idea of health's entailing freedom; dispassion, or selflessness; and transcendence -- the kind of thing that Dominic was indicating.
Cheers!
