Re: Truvia Deception - was Stretching an LM (plus diabetes ideas)
Obviously, you are right - if it were stevia, it would be named stevia.
So, maybe/probably some chemists were at work, fumbled with the original
composition, and wanted the 'natural' reputation for their 'fumbled'
product, for patences/money sake.
Keep going and uncover such s..t!

Re: Truvia Deception - was Stretching an LM (plus diabetes ideas)
this clearly raises the question of exactly what this truvia is.
if it is a product that gets patented, then you know it has undergone some
bastardization and may have little to do with natural. think of aspartame
and all its dangers. could this be a new aspartame?

Thanks for that link Sheri. Luckily I do not need my tea and coffee sweetened and use a sweetener so rarely just in cooking I think I will stick to Xylitol!! It’s just that I read that Stevia has properties which help diabetes, cholesterol, HBP etc. so was looking forward to trying it!!

Re: Truvia Deception - was Stretching an LM (plus diabetes ideas)
To make a product which they could patent – the manufacturers 'refined' a single ingredient out of stevia and called it Rebiana. In their company literature they will only say it is "highly purified ingredient" found in stevia. Nature packages a host of molecules and co-factors together – so any time chemists get into highly refining, or highly purifying – even if it started from a 'natural' substance, it is worth skipping and going back to the natural substance.
The only problem I find with using natural stevia is that it varies in sweetness a little bit from batch to batch. So be prepared to make minor adjustments as you go from one bottle to the next.

Re: Truvia Deception - was Stretching an LM (plus diabetes ideas)
Stevia the herb has some bitter components which are extracted out when making Rebiana.
Stevia the herb makes me sick, the extract from it, Rebiana, so far hasn't, but I haven't used large quantities yet.
I just started using Tumeric extract by Jarrow with 95% curcumenoids. Works much better than using ground herb Tumeric on joint pains and overall noticeable feeling better, supposedly for chronic inflammation.
They used to make a licorice extract with specific components from licorice that worked great for adrenal glands and exhaustion while just using licorice herbal wasn't as noticeable.
Using the natural herb form may not always be best for everyone.

I don't use Truvia (nor will I use anything manufactured by Coca-Cola or Cargill).
If, however, Truvia is rebaudioside A, as one of your citations states, that is the sweetest of stevia's glycosides. How does Cargill extract it and how does their extraction differ from older commercially available stevia extracts sold in the US?
Peace,
Dale
