fever in cat

Post by Tanya Marquette »

Just got a call about a kitten with 105* fever as per vet exam.

Dx = viral infection.

What can anyone tell me about such high fevers in a kitten (about 3 months old).

Cat is affected in upper leg joint so that it is painful for him to walk.

Pressure agg

He is Hot to the touch

Likes company (2nd kitten was sleeping against him this a.m.) and he accepts petting, just not touch on the leg joint.

Appetite totally off and not drinking.
Vet wanted to do a.b and would not hydrate without an ab.

any suggestions or information will be appreciated

When you say the vet wouldn't hydrate, is the kitten showing signs of dehydration: when the skin on his back is picked up and twisted does it go straight back down or does it stay up and only go back down slowly? If it is staying up and only going back slowly it is vital that fluids are got into this animal; if the owner doesn't know how to do this she should seek help from another vet asap.

As for the fever, treat it the same as you would when working the case of any individual: part of the totality of the case.

Yes, it is appears to be dehydrated. The vet was punishing my daughter for refusing the ab shot!
Further, the vet on duty reported my daughter to the authorities because she refused the ab.
Fortunately, the lead vet called my daughter when he discovered what had happened to apologize. Am
hoping he calls the authority to cancel the charges. But he is trying to pull the kitten back into the clinic. He
is somewhat supportive of holistic/homeopathic treatment.
recommended Bell be given so will see if it helped today. cat was running very high fever (105), hot to touch and very weak.
Since originally posting I discovered that the 2nd kitten was vax'd, in the home, by the shelter that placed this kitten.
Know it was not rabies but do not know what it was.
Also, the sick kitten received a panleuk vax about 4 weeks ago. That disease presumably is running wild in the stray cats in the City.
There is thought that this might be Calici virus which may have been part of the vaccine shot given the 2nd kitten. So shedding of that
virus may have been the cause of contagion.

Have you looked in the kittens mouth? Normally in Calici virus they get ulcers in the mouth and this is why the kitten doesn't want to eat or drink. How is she rehydrating the kitten?

I will ask her about the mouth examination.
Last nite I had her squirting water into the cats mouth and feeding baby food organic winter squash with a syringe.
The vet should have given her a hydration bag and syringe and showedher how to do it. Will see today what transpires.

Ask her to look at the gums, the tongue and the throat. Look for redness and ulceration and then add that into your repping if it is present. Also look for signs of respiratory issues and eye inflammation as this is often present.

She is best giving small amounts of water regularly and I would look to get hold of a liquid invalid food for cats. In the UK Hills do one called a/d. It is ideal for syringe feeding as it hydrates as well as feeds.

there are no sx in the mouth at all.
in the US they use a product called Pediolyte for babies.
My daughter will be making a solution of water, honey and salt instead
She is looking for syringes for administering the remedy in liquid and I just recommended she up the potency to Bell 200c
The illness is changing sx slightly with a minimal amt of improvement. That is the reason for upping the potency.
The kitten is going back to the vet today for hydration. And she was asked to inquire about what vaccines the other kitten
received 2 weeks ago. I am sure that is the cause of this illness!
Water: she knows to give water.
Are there any comments on the remedy/potency choice?
thanks

From the information that you gave below I would say you need a lot more info to be able to rep to look at remedies:

Restless or not restless?
Joint swollen?
Which leg/legs?
How does he react to temperatures: is he seeking warmth, seeking cold, what does he do if covered?
What are bowel movements and urination like: any change at all?

At three months it would be normal for a kitten to want to be with another so I wouldn't be including that; it would be more relevant if he didn't want others around.

I did not give the whole picture and since posting have learned some more
it was the rear right leg that caused the limping.
likes to lie on the painful part
body hot to the touch
ears became very cold last nite and still are.
nose had gotten very cold first when he was stressed out by the visit and forced feeding yesterdy
then nose became hot and ears became cold--they still are today.
he likes being held but is not really a lap cat. much prefers playing around others or being petted
he could not get into litter box yesterday--limped to it and then left.
was put in box last nite and urinated
this a.m. urine was voluptuous
hasn't been eating so bowel movement not reported
vet reported temperature at 105* body is hot to the touch
hurt to touch the sore leg
today he is now sore in other parts of body as well.
cooled off a bit by opening his legs and letting cool air wash over him.
he rec'd 5 doses Bell 30c last nite with minimal effect
is being syringe fed baby squash which he is taking this a.m.
that is what i can get long distance at the moment

Looking at the info you have given so far I have repped the attached in Boger-B rep. I wouldn't be feeding the squash as cats are carnivores; the food I mentioned is actually meat based. Once cats loose their appetite it can be very difficult to get them eating again, the longer they go without food the harder it gets, so it is important to start syringe feeding as soon as possible.
