Prof Ernst has dabbled with Arnica before - but let us do it properly.

Basics of the experiment would be thus:
After rhinoplasty there is extensive bruising.
Arnica is well known for its effects of removing bruising and pain.
For example Arnica cream is administered to boxers' faces (especially around the eyes) while the
resting between rounds.
So we can test the effects of Arnica on post-rhinoplasty patients.

We will need to seek funding and a co-operative rhinoplasty clinic, obtain the consent of their
patients, randomly choose the consented patients to receive a blind dose of either an unmedicated
sugar globulee or a similar Arnica pill.

At 2, 5 and 10 days post op we then ask a panel of unconnected plastic surgeon to judge from the
level of bruising in each case how many days have passed since the operation.

The test would be to see whether Arnica stood up to the claims.

One proviso. We are not going to go through the debacle of the Horizon program switching of
samples*. So the labelling and administration must be done by a homeopath or closely supervised by
a homeopath.

* In the Horizon program, both histamine and distilled water were serially diluted and succussed and
applied to basophils.
Expectation was that the histamine solutions would affect the basophils and the water would not -
for if water affected basophils we would all be dead.

The result was declared as inconclusive. The reason is interesting. Strangely some water samples
had affected the basophils and some histamine samples had not. No one on the program commented
about this.

For simple biological reasons 'water' samples could not possibly have any effect on basophils for if
they did we would be without an effective immune system.

The only conclusion is that someone switched samples by mis-labelling them. Whether this was done
on purpose or accidentally remains a mystery. And it would not surprise me if this kind of thing
has been done before to discredit homeopathy or to save Randi from paying out his $1M.

Whilst the "aims of the BMJ are to publish rigorous accessible information that will help doctors
improve their practice" one hopes an additional reason would be to help relieve patients' symptoms?

Realising the BMJ is keen for its members to write in (BMJ2003;326:985 ) to express their opinions I
am doing so in response to a letter by Obstetric consultant Susan Bewley which you published,
ironically, on the page following your extensive editorial on 'Placebo by Proxy'. The letter gives
voice to non GMC/ non BMA 'armchair clinicians' who are not involved in clinical care and who have a
bigoted opinion on Homeopathy.

choose which form of therapy they seek to help their symptoms with? The Nightingale Collaboration
has published the CAP guidelines relating to homeopathic advertising drawn up by CAP on Friday,
before these guidelines are even published by the CAP on their own website!

Did you know there is no single proven effective medical treatment for any condition with the term
'syndrome' in the diagnosis?

In my practice it is particularly those people with long term chronic conditions and the
'heartsinks' who appear to have found benefit from Homeopathy, making my GP working day sweeter.

Patients deserve to continue to be able to access Homeopathy, which has been available alongside
standard treatment as a complementary therapy on the NHS, since the inception of the NHS,
particularly when your own BMJclinical evidence data

knowledge is and especially at this time of financial difficulty.

Meanwhile research should continue to further advance our understanding of the effects of Homeopathy
which continues to have real effects in patients' lives.
