Health food store observation - oh my

Post by D C Rona »

Stopping by the local health food store I overheard a lady asking the clerk for Arnica – she had just had some 'work' (I think it was botox????) and had to be free of bruises for a wedding this weekend. The clerk showed her the Arnica 6, 30 and 200 and said she could take any of them, the more she took, the quicker she would heal. She asked about the numbers and he said the 200 was the highest they had and would work quicker. She proceeded to pick up 3 vials of 200c – one for each day until the wedding. I normally keep my mouth shut at this store – but spoke up and suggested an alternative approach with water dosing - and explained that more is not better, faster or more effective. She was appreciative of the advice, but turned and picked up a 4th vial of 200 saying – 'you don't understand – I have to look good for this wedding' and the clerk spoke up – 'don't worry – it can't hurt you'. Oh my.

The shopkeeper sounds like a few of the 'homeopaths' that I have had discussions with on the internet over the years; perhaps he had chatted to the same 'homeopaths'.

This kind of thing at health food stores is common

I have sent people to pick up a remedy, not having the remedy, clerks will recommend another remedy saying it is just as good, rather than lose a sale.
Fortunately, I let people know ahead of time to "accept no substitutes" and speak to me first.

Another problem
some clients go to chiropractors who "practice homeopathy" by muscle testing from about 20 remedies they may have in their office and prescribe, without knowledge of the patient's current homeopathic treatment.
I advise clients who are being treated homeopathically to discuss it with their homeopathic practitioner first.

Well, this is akin to taking aspirin as a safe medicine--take 1 a day for ever! Stomach bleeding and other consequences
but people still fall into the 'more is better' mentality.
We, on the other hand, get hammered for public ignorance!

the health food stores are an out of control arena.

chiros? i would ask them how they would feel if homeopaths
began to practice adjustments to complement their remedy prescriptions!

I have approached local health food stores and offered free instruction on homeopathy. I teach a minimum amount of information on four remedies at one time, and repeat the minimum dose law at every class. These folks should not be recommending remedies for legal reasons, and they need to know this, I also tell them about provings and inadvertent provings done by buying 4 vials of 200C Arnica!! We provide education to clients yes, but we need to do this for the portion of the public that has contact with both remedies and the buying public.

As for chiropractors, they are starting to ask for classes on how to use homeopathy in their practices, and the homeopathic community is looking at who will provide this and how we will certify that they "know" what they are doing. Unfortunately, this process may take a while, since the schools need to come up with a program and CHC a test, it's not just DC's, it's dentists and acupuncture folks as well, who want to add to their treatment options.

so true Tanya...I actually have a 3 yr old client and her father is a Chiro. I knew this before but her mom brought her in and I chose a remedy and then after the remedy was sent dad decided he would muscle test and thought that a lower potency would be better. ugggg It ended up working out o.k. because I explained that I will take his testing into consideration but it would best to give her what was suggested. It ended up helping so he was fine with it but it gets so complicated sometimes.

I've done training sessions for the health section of our local co-op to teach the staff how to handle just this type of situation -- and to make them understand that homeopathic remedies, while non-toxic, can be problematic if not properly used. Sounds like your local health food store employees could use some training!

I once asked about their training – they say the Boiron representative gave them classes. I believe the rep may have given them a handout – and perhaps once upon a time did a class – but that store has a frequent turn over in staff – so I have my doubts.

This kind of misunderstanding and misuse of homeopathy is spreading, and articles like this do not help:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/15/fashi ... .html?_r=2

There is no direction given by these surgeons recommending arnica after procedures, the use by models is distorted..then they go on about acne and skin care...mixing botanical, homeopathic internal and external use up, and 'getting toxicity' from it. Oh boy.
