off topic: probiotics

Post by Ellen Madono »

Hi,

A 4 year old is coming in with 20 times a day vomiting with the flu or plane rides. Frequent flus. This started at 18 months when he was given 5 rounds of antibiotics. He also started life in an incubator dripping antibiotics. The homeopathic case is pretty clear. But the condition of his gut is a maintaining symptom.

So, I think I should also be recommending probiotics. I know how to get yogurt starter (in Japan) but am unsure about the probiotics as supplements. In the US, the good stuff was refrigerated. I don't see that on the US internet market. Will dry probiotics be ok. Also, there is the question of whether to bacteria is alive and which types of bacteria are important. In the US I see advertisements that the bacteria comes from Japan. LOL. But I don't see much on the Japanese internet market. I am thinking I should order from the States. Would appreciate and suggestions from someone with experience.

Best,
Ellen

You may also wish to look at the bowel nosodes, particularly Gaertner, for this type of situation.

Hi Ellen,
There are good products which are not refigerated. There is also Saccharomyces boulardii
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharomyces_boulardii a type of yeast used for travellers diarhoea and
re-establishing a good gut population. This one is usually room temperature stable.
Also have a look at other naturally fermented foods available locally - wouldn't unpasteurised Miso fit
into this category?
I think as well (and you probably have looked at this) it would be important to understand about the initial need for
5 rounds of antibiotics. The recurrent vomiting episodes may have started after them, but what came before?
Has he exchanged the pre a/biotics sympotms for the post a/biotics ones? Or have the anitbiotics caused suppression
adding a layer that covers the previous symptoms? Or maybe now he has a combination of both.
Gail

Yikes. Poor kid.

The book Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Natasha Campbell McBride lays out a natural plan for rehabilitating a messed up gut. It is worth checking out. Lots of natural and naturally fermented foods.
Probiotics should always be refrigerated.
