The March 2011 issue of Discover magazine has a piece on microbes in the human gut. Thought you might find an extract interesting. Or amusing. Or horrifying.
"Heavy use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance but researchers now speculate that antibiotics can also upset the balance of the microbial community, allowing disease to take over rather than fighting it.
[We could have told them that!]
... "Last year, Stanford microbiologist David Relman published a study that illustrated the potentially devastating impact of antibiotics on the microbiome [gut flora]. He gave three healthy adults a five-day course of the antibiotic Cipro, then another course six months later, and monitored the state of the microbiome after each treatment. The gut flora of all three subjects gradually recovered from the impact of the antibiotic treatment but never returned to their original state -- they have different compositions and were less diverse. [My emphasis.] 'We don't know if these differences matter to health,' Relman says. 'But in general you'd be concerned about a change.' He had chosen Cipro because it has limited effectiveness against most species of bacteria in the gut, but it still affected one-third to one-half of the microbial flora in the subjects. [My emphasis.] 'Knocking out one organism could have a ripple effect on the lives of others,' Relman says."
Useful info to pass on to patients who insist on antibiotics for colds -- and to the doctors who cravenly prescribe them.
Peace,
Dale

Re: Antibiotic damage to the gut
Actually quite horrifying.
Always in the guise of providing information and science, these types of articles
skew the ultimate meaning. In this case it totally minimizes the impact of destroying
gut flora by saying they have no idea if it means anything.
An honest report would say that even if they had no understanding of the function of
gut flora, the body obviously had a need for them as we all have them and nature
is designed better than anything man can create.
if they really were honest, they would report on how gut flora affect absorption of nutrients
and keep harmful bacteria at bay so we don't get sick. it might talk about the belief by
some that all illness begins in the gut which is why some people focus to heavily on
gut health.
Very biased, horrifying--certainly not surprising. These are the kinds of articles that
I like to leave online comments believing that many mainstream people will read them

Re: Antibiotic damage to the gut
I tell you...................the children who are UNvaccinated, with autism, all have antibiotics in their history - mom taking in pregnancy or during labor and delivery IV or after delivery directly to the infant or via breastmilk. EVERY ONE that I know (or mom had rhogam with mercury or baby had hep b vax at birth and they didn't know)
MORE and more I see the severe damage of antibotics, right up there with vaccines
The gut is actually a big part of the immune system
