What might this mean?

The patient's fear is start of MS; I'm wondering what other
possibilities might be?

About a (?) few months ago she noticed areas of numbness on her calf.
At the edges of these areas she felt episodes of a sort of tingling
feeling. Another area has appeared in area of the back of the
shoulder on same side. It comes and goes, sometimes persistent other
times not noticeable. Same pattern, something like tingling at the
outer edge of the patch, and numbness inside it. The area comes and
goes, but is gradually spreading. (I have no case for this, but it's
someone I know well and am familiar with the general history.)

Any thoughts?
