relationship between tonsils out and gaining weight.

Post by Carol Orr »

I just heard on radio about a study of 800 children who had tonsils out and
they all gained weight, sometimes becoming obese. They don't really know
why...but my granddaughter had her tonsils out and she eats everything and is
probably 10 to 20 pounds overweight...and seems to be gaining more and more as
time goes by. I think she had them out about a year ago. Anyone have any
ideas about this? Gains weight after operation? The study suggested but they
don't really know..that they used to have to breath more with enlarged tonsils
and that burned calories...or that it was less painful to eat after teh
operation..Neither parent is overweight and her sister is skinny as a rail.
Might it have had something to do with the anaesthetic? A phosperous like
poisoning?

Hello Carol,
From personal experience (I had mine out as an adult – long and ugly story) I can tell you they do not always cut on the proper tissue. I lost the ability to taste salt for over 2 years. This drastically affected my sense of food quality and quantity. Yes – anesthetic can also be a big factor. There is a sense that this is 'routine' surgery and the junior level surgical team is often assigned to these surgeries.

Interesting. The tonsils were always considered a vestigal and uselss structure.
When I was very young, almost all the kids had their tonsils out, me included. It
was not unusual for an 18 mo old baby to have this surgery

As with the appendix. It's now known that both are part of the lymphatic system, and removing them does not make its job easier!

Yes, that was my point. Isn't it always the same. Man thinking he can best nature.
It is that control and conquer mentality that has gotten us into trouble throughout the ages!
As for weight gaining after tonsilectomy? I don't know. In my case, food was the drug of choice
in my household and it was forced on you. So eating patterns were very stressed out and weight
was a big problem. So not clear evidence regarding the effect of tonsil removal.

You didn"t notice a change in taste, tho? That seems like an interesting observation, and could be useful to know how common an effect it is?

I think I was 18 mos when they operated on me. So know recollection or knowledge. It was never talked about
in my family.

Tonsils are 'sulphur sacs' and provide immunity like the once-thought-useless appendix. Sulphur helps correct fat allergies and without the 'sulphur sacs' you are provided less immunity / digestibility of fats.

This information comes from the excellent book 'The Ultimate Healing System' by Donald Lepore ND.
