Bones

Post by J tikari »

There is a remedy that when taken expells bones stuck in the throat. Can
anyone remember the remedy?
Also, is it OK to give dogs chicken bones?

Raw bones are fine, Jeff. They become very pliable in the stomach acid, and anything a dog can fit down his throat gets digested. Often something may scrape on the way down, and give the impression of being stuck. Most things that do get stuck are big enough to see from the mouth, and can be fished out with a hemostat.

Silicea wouldn't be the one of which you are thinking?

the issue is cooked chicken bones - they can splinter and get caught in their throat
raw is supposed to be fine
but you will find varying opinions online

and probably silica or hepar sulph is the one to help expel bones
the remedy that has 'feels like bone caught in throat' is hepar sulph

Hi, Everyone
This site probably has all the answers, and then some about raw feeding.
My Standard Poodle has been getting a raw chicken quarter every morning for the last 3 years. No problem.
Cooked chicken bones are to be avoided, because yes, they can splinter. Raw bones, the fresher the better, don't splinter.
The online anti-raw propaganda has been cooked up by the pet food and veterinary industry to scare the pants off people,
not acknowledging of course that commercial food contamination is an all too common problem, and many
commercial foods include dead stock, euthanized animals, flea collars, etc.
With raw feeding you can just about say goodbye to vet visits for all too common and preventable
health problems.
Avoiding vaccinations and using Homeopathy instead of allopathic meds will ensure your pet lives a much longer
and healthier life.

Thank you all for your response on the chicken bone issue.
I'd like to know if anyone has experienced a bone (chicken or other) stuck
in a dogs throat.?
I've had dogs (large and small) for over 50 years and have fed them with left over
bones off the table and never had a bone stuck in the pets throat. If ever a bone
lodges itself in the throat, the dog coughs it out and re-chews it.
The med I was looking for for bone stuck in the throat is Lobelia.

A dachund I had was fully on commercial pet food and lived to 14 years. She was never vaccinated and was never given anything but homeopathic meds. After age 10 she got cell salts No. 28 everyday and Crat in her water.

Presuming there must be or have been a problem with American dogs and chicken bones (though I did not personally experience it), I wonder whether it is not that American dogs' digestion is disturbed from all the vaccination and the poor commerical food?

We had a young Russian spaniel when we were in Russia, and the lovely Russian lady who worked for us would feed her chicken leg bones. I asked her not to because I still believed that it was a bad thing to do, and she was most astounded. All dogs eat such leftovers and are lucky to get them, she said!

Another case in point might be the year where in my area in VA we had an appearance of the 17-year locust. I remember reading a warning that dogs should not eat the locusts because they would cause digestive problems, but our then young, healthy rescue dog gobbled up every one she could get her jaws on with no ill effects. My thought was that she maybe had better digestion than dogs who were having problems with eating the locusts. I have no idea why she loved them so, but she sure did.

If a dog is occupied with retro-coughing because of yearly rabies shots, maybe it can't cough up a bone? So I think once again, it may well be a problem of our own making. Teresa (Northern VA)
