Hi,
I am a mom to a teenager with aspergers (and sensory processing disorder, ocd) as well as a homeopathy student. My daughter is rather tough to work with. She has many symptoms and apparently it is hard to tease out what is the essence of her case.
We have been working with a classical homeopath (3rd one, actually) - mostly with water dosing for about 1-1/2 years. I am still confused about evaluating her response to remedies. We have not ever had a very clear amelioration although looking back over this time, I would say she is definitely improved overall. She is very sensitive to remedies so we generally give 1/4-1/2 tsp. from a 2nd cup of water.
Right now, she is on Silica 30C in water. I can't really see a clear improvement and her OCD and sensory stuff is more intense. She has gotten some diarrhea after a dose or starts chewing on her fingers or looks pale and ill - these I would call "detox" symptoms (she used to appear this way when taking supplements in bio-med). Hard to know when to repeat as there is no clear improvement so hard to spot a downturn. Do you see with autistic children, that the remedy can cause a detox type of reaction that looks negative but is actually good?
With her brother, who is on Nat. Mur., I see very clear improvement of his skin and mood as soon as he takes his remedy. Why so murky with her? I know improvement is happening but so unclear...
Just wondering what others have experienced in working with children on the autistic spectrum. When you read paper cases, it is presented so clearly. They took the remedy - then this, that and the other improved. Took the remedy again when they had a relapse of symptoms - sounds so simple(:

If I were you, Sandra (my kids are all grown, but I was a devoted mom), I would look into the Weston A Price Foundation and specifically a Dr. McBride, I think her name is, who has done amazing work with gut issues in autistic spectrum kids. The articles are there to read on the WAPF site.
It would depend on where you live, but you might be able to get “farm food” and that, or even probiotics, might turn your daughter around, besides helping the whole family. We always think about vaccines in connection with autistic spectrum disorders, but there is also the fact that our diets have totally changed over the past 50 years. And it is possible to reverse that. I am not denigrating homeopathy, but the founder of homeopathy wrote about removing “maintaining causes”, and Leaky Gut (which my youngest daughter and I personally had) and other such gut problems are surely a big maintaining cause.
Once that is addressed, homeopathy may work much better. In the WAPF quarterly, a homeopath named Calabrese (I know Dr. Luc personally, but not her) writes quite interesting articles, but I think the main issue is what Dr. McBride addresses. Teresa (Northern VA—close to PA farm food thankfully!)

Hi Theresa,
I am familiar with Weston Price and our homeopath is also a proponent. My daughter has been on a gluten free and dairy free diet for quite a few years and the emphasis on lacto-fermented foods and raw dairy doesn't really work with dairy free though she is now eating a lot of kim chi (she is Korean) and pickles from the health food store so is getting more fermented foods. She has a pretty good diet - probably the best in our family so I am not sure this is where the problem lies. Her OCD also makes her very rigid with diet and I am actually trying to get her to relax a bit about what she eats. I guess I am really trying to understand - is this remedy making her body "detox"; or is it kicking up strep or some other bacteria that perhaps brought on the OCD so the OCD is getting worse? The OCD and the sensory sensitivity is defnitely continuing to get more intense on this remedy. Or is it just not the right remedy? I will probably give her a dose of Nux Vomica today so that she can get to school. Usually that eases some of this. Maybe that should be her chronic remedy. Just don't know...

It is crucial that you discuss this with your homeopath. You should be able to sit and talk about your expectations of homeopathy and in turn weigh this against or for what your homeopath's expectations are of treating your daughter's case.
You need to have a context for what 'overall improvement' really is and also be able to define a clear amelioration and how this could follow through towards cure.
Every case is taken on its individual merits - cure can be prompt, detailed and complicated, take considerable time and there are many other permutations of what is entailed in the journey towards cure, and without knowing the case in detail no-one here could possibly say what to expect but your homeopath, who has taken the case and should know what is involved should be able to enlighten you. Your post also suggests that your daughter has had several rx, so that is also something to discuss with your homeopath - why and for what reason is the case requiring a number of rx (if that is what is happening).
You are also suggesting that you are going to self prescribe a rx for your daughter and I would advise that you discuss this first with your homeopath for obvious reasons - there is a 'need to know', what an intercurrent rx or change of rx might do - if you feel you are being placed in a situation whereby you need to interject someone else's prescribing that doesn't bode well to me.
Your homeopath should also be advising you on when to repeat and not leave it up to you if you are not sure when to do this.
There is a lot that one could write in theory about what happens after the first prescription and that, as is with all case management, will be excellent rules of thumb but the emphasis is always on each individual case.
So, demand to know and understand what is going on

Re: What to look for to confirm that a remedy is positive
Thank you, Joy. I will continue to try to understand and communicate. I don't find this too hard with the other members of our family and our treatment. It is my daughter's case that seems so complicated and confusing and often so lacking in clarity for me. I would love to find a definition for a "clear amelioration" for her - maybe that is something I can ask about.

Definitely talk to your homeopath but a good remedy should result in improvements in one or more of the general signs of health i.e.
1) Sleep & Energy
2) Sense of well being
3) Calmness
4) Clarity of mind
5) Adaptability to the environment (e.g. improvement in allergies)
along with any improvements in other sxs of concern which may occur later, even after worsening.
If there were improvements in sxs of concern but any of the general signs worsened (without any of them improving) it would indicate a suppressive remedy.
If the sxs of concern worsened but one or more of the general signs improved (altho some might temporarily worsen) it indicates the remedy is working.
It is very hard to be objective about your own family. That is what the homeopath's job is.
