FIND THE REMEDY'S NAME (146)

Attention PLEASE! Post your answers to my private
email address ashahrdar@yahoo.com

You can send related material to the list without
mentioning the name of the remedy.
Find the name of the following remedy:

The most important mental symptom of this remedy is
'better by diverting attention'. Symptoms are
prominently aggravated by thinking about them.
Changing position also ameliorates the symptoms and
esp pains.

There is a great desire for amusement.
Pains are agonizing and causes the patient to twist
and toss.

Sleepiness accompanied by confusion of mind is also an
important feature of this small remedy.
Sincerely,

Mind
When concentrated, drunkenness is almost instantaneous; with the ordinary
dose, it occurs about twenty minutes after ingestion. In a small dose xxxxx
is a tonic, stimulating beverage, producing an agreeable excitement, and
affording support against great fatigue. In increased doses, this root
determines an intoxication of a sorrowful, silent and sleepy character,
completely different from that produced by alcoholic drinks. The habitual
drinkers of xxxxx take it six or eight times a day, but then a nervous
trembling seizes them, and they can scarcely raise the cup to their lips.
The intoxication does not last longer than two hours, but if a person only
takes it occasionally, the effects may continue twelve; when taken at
intervals of some days, the intoxication continues for six hours. When made
from the root grown in damp soils, the drinker remains plunged in a deep
torpor, and becomes irritated by the least noise. Often when the dose is too
great or too small, instead of the sleep an intoxication, accompanied by
fantastic ideas and a strong desire to skip about, although one cannot for a
moment hold himself on his legs. Felt all day unusual life, vigor, and
exhilaration. Felt more lively than usual; in better spirits; inclined to
work. Capable of doing more work, without fatigue or brain-fag.
Head
Dizziness and frontal pressure, even when lying in bed in the morning.
From 5 to 9 P.M. unusual dizziness, swimming sensation and faintness.
Pains, especially of the head, relieved temporarily by turning the mind to
another topic.
Awoke with very worn feeling of the brain, decided brain-fag; getting on
foot felt better.
Headache and sleepiness so great as to interfere with work. Head ached all
night with fulness of frontal region. Feeling as if the frontal region was
solid with pain. This ache, during the day, gradually moved backward to base
of brain and along the medulla oblongata; relieved by slight motion,
increased by large, continued, and more active motion. Slight mental effort,
passing from topic to topic, for an instant relieves; sustained effort
increases the pain.
Vessels of neck and base of brain full, as if circulation had been cut off
by a cord; the whole back of head, neck, and cerebellum felt congested to
the brain and cord-centre; sore inside and tender to outside pressure; all
those parts of the nervous system felt as if double or treble their ordinary
size.

From Vermeulen's Synoptic II

REGION
Central nervous system. Circulation. Digestion. Urogenital organs.
-
LEADING SYMPTOMS
M Buoyancy and exaltation & fullness of vessels of brain,
followed by brain fag and dull aching in the head.
Nervous, "as if every nerve was strung up to the highest pitch." [Clarke]
M Better DIVERSION OF MIND [mental symptoms; excitement; depression; headache].
"Forgets all about her pains if amused with anything, but directly she is tired of it she exclaims, 'Oh, my … !'" [Clarke]
"It is a familiar enough effect to us all that we can temporarily forget our troubles or minimise them if attention be strongly directed elsewhere. But the first inclination would be to consider that probably XXX patients are self-centered individuals making over much of their feelings and not really enduring nearly as much as they think, so that diversion from themselves and their pains is not so very difficult. But this first conception is probably wrong. It is more likely that the effect of the drug is rather in making the faculty of attention more concentrated, as it were, so that when it is turned in a new direction it follows that to the exclusion of other stimuli.
Under hypnosis pain stimuli can be inhibited and it is well know that martyrs and fanatics in the grasp of their enthusiasm seem oblivious of physical reactions. The XXX effects seem to be more in line with the latter than the former, which are those of inhibition of a particular set of stimuli.
But while the fanatic is wholly possessed with his fanaticism, the patient who needs XXX can let a comparatively trivial diversion replace his reaction to pain and make him forget it almost as though the effect produced was that of so concentrating the attention that if one object is presented to it [not necessarily an obviously important one as with the religious fanatic], others cannot be perceived." [Wheeler & Kenyon]
M Very sensitive to external impressions.
M Narrowness.
Suitable for people in whom there is a drastic reduction in their range of interests - for example, in the case of circulatory disturbances - so that all they can think of are their complaint, irritation and pain. This might include depression in the elderly, or the after-effects of apoplexy or commotio cerebri. [Leeser]
G "Find myself walking fast before I am conscious of it, legs and feet seem to be running away with or from me."
Buoyancy.
G Weakness in morning.
Better Rising and moving about.
G Great appetite.
"During some of the proving, noticeably a day or two previous and succeeding to the ninth day, took in food with a sort of ravenous haste; no taste of food, but a ravenousness would have impelled me to swallow anything with an abnormal avidity." [Allen]
G Sexual desire increased.
"More amorousness during the primary part of the proving than for years." [Allen]
G Restless desire in pains to change the position,
which generally gives little or no >.
G > Motion in open air.
But gets tired soon [opp. to Fl-ac., which seems to have "unlimited energy"].
G [2]. Thinking of complaints [2]. Followed by congestion to head and fullness in frontal region [1/1].
HEAD : Pain in forehead better cold air [1]; better open air [1]; better diversion [2/1]; better while lying [1].
EYE : Sensation as if eyes were wide open [1].
FACE : Sensation of fullness, as of pressure from inside out [1/1]. Sensation of swelling [1].
MOUTH : Sensation as if tongue were covered with fur or velvet [1].
THROAT : Choking when drinking [2]; while eating [2].
STOMACH : Sour eructations one hour before meals [1/1].
ABDOMEN : Cramping pain better motion [1].
RECTUM : Constant urging [2].
CHEST : Milk, increased, too profuse [1]; milk in breasts during puberty [1/1].
EXTREMITIES : Flushes of heat in hands [1; Sulph .].
SLEEP : Sleepiness as from intoxication [1; Nux-m .].
PERSPIRATION : Perspiration after waking from sleep [1].
SKIN : Unhealthy skin, every scratch festers or heals with difficulty [1]. Sensation of strength [1].
