Homeopathy for surgery recovery

Post by Neta »

Hello Everyone,

I'm now here and seeking some info for my 15 years of age daughter's surgery.
In about a month she will have a very serious open-back surgery. The procedure will start with a very long incision on the back of the spine, retracting the muscles off the spine to reach the spinal cord.
How can homeopathy help her in recovery, help managing the pain after surgery, help in the healing process, and lastly reduce scar appearance (might be up to 18" long!).
I already stocked up on Arnica gel and pellets. What else can help?

She is also donating blood for herself to be used during the surgery if needed. The appointments are one, and two weeks prior to surgery, (2 appointments to collect 2 pints). What can she take to strengthen her body after blood donation?

Thank you all for any input,
Neta

Neta - just one very important thing. Do NOT use Arnica gel on her wound! You must never, never apply Arnica cream or gel to broken skin as you can get a nasty rash. It should only be given internally in such cases.
Secondly, there are a number of things you can do to help her recover after surgery, both for the after-effects of the anaesthetic as well as for the surgery itself - and there are specific remedies for the spine. But I feel you should be under a professional homeopath if possible, who can guide you and supply you with the necessary remedies.
Don't worry about the blood - if she is eating well she will soon replace what has been taken.

Hi Neta,

I think you would find it helpful to buy--and read beforehand--one of the "home prescriber" manuals, that are made for use in the home, and include the basic information you will need in order to effectively choose the remedies and evaluate their effectiveness.

There are at least several remedies that might well come into play; she might well need one or another initially, then change(s) of remedy as healing progresses. If you are going to do the prescribing yourself (definitely feasible for this type of situation), you will need to have a good understanding of (a) how to take the (trauma) case; (b) which symptoms will guide toward the needed remedy; (c) finding the remedy; (d) what potency and repetition; (e) how to know when the remedy needs changing; (f) how to select the new remedy... There are books that can give you that guidance, tho you should give yourself time to read and absorb the material thoroughly.

Here are some possibilities that I'm aware of:

Homeopathic Medicine At Home," M. Panos and J. Heimlich
http://www.homeopathic.com/store/product=1053
"Everybody's Guide to H'c Med." R. Cummings and D. Ullman
http://www.homeopathic.com/store/product=1817
"Homeopathic Self-Care: The Quick and Easy Guide for the Whole Family," J. Reichenberg-Ullman and R. Ullman
http://www.homeopathic.com/store/product=1084
I think you will find any of these books (and there are other possibilities too, of course) to be very interesting, readable and useful!

Best wishes,
Shannon

You haven't given any details, Neta.
However in general terms -
Hypericum will reduce the pain considerably after the operation.
Calendula will heal the wound rapidly.
Silicea will prevent scaring.

Hi Neta,

I strongly recommend that you consult with a good classical homeopath and don't try to go this alone. Advice you may receive through this list or others is just not sufficient - you need to give full details of the case to someone local who can treat. Arnica can't be used indiscriminately, it's possibly not even the best remedy as has been mentioned. Arnica gel is certainly problematic.

I think you need peace of mind here, so you will be able to give the full emotional and physical support your daughter will need, and giving remedies prescribed by a homeopath who knows your daughter and knows the full details of the case will give you that peace of mind as you won't constantly be questioning what you're doing. Not to mention that the treatment your daughter will receive will be more effective. Many qualified homeopaths will not treat their own children in this kind of situation if another homeopath is available, because the stress in itself can greatly confuse the prescribing.

Homeopathy can do so much to help in these situations - it's a waste not to do it properly.

Regards,

Vera

An earlier post had mentioned staph, as surgery involves loss of vital fluids (Blood).
Our rebels enjoyed turning it down strongly with their half knowledge.
Rebels know more & more about less & less.

Thank you all for great suggestions and support.
The more I read the more I understand how it makes more sense at this point to turn to the professionals to get the help we need.
I'll look for one in my area of Northern Virginia. Will keep you posted.

Cheers,
Neta
