I worry about the need for supplements, have treated too many supplement junkies, if one cannot get the desired nutritional balance from quality food then something is wrong and I do not think that supplements are the answer. I am not referring here to people who cannot afford quality food but the supplement industry seems to be a middle class addiction. It represents a huge multi billion $ onslaught that takes advantage of people's poor lifestyles as well as their money and feeds the myths (I can already hear the replies being typed, "I couldn't possibly live without my ------ supplement", which just proves the point). I believe homeopathy could be of use, they say it is very good :-) Try substituting homeopathy for supplements would be my message, i.e. if you really really need the virtues of a particular supplement then something ails you enough to be treated with something other than the crude supplement.

Interesting – this theme is being discussed on another list – I’ll send the same response regarding the potential need for supplements:
I respectfully ask you to consider that:
1. the soils are greatly depleted of their original nutritional content - and that even 'organic local' is not necessarily as full of nutrients as it was even a few years ago.
2. the plants we grow are modified (by selective breeding and now by genetic modification) for size, texture, flavor and shelf life - not nutrition
3. the 'farm diet' requires farm 'life' as well - exposures, stresses, working from dawn to dusk, and sleeping from dusk to dawn, etc. The modern 'lifestyle' depletes nutrients at a far greater rate than the original design called for
4. modern pharmaceuticals deplete the body beyond what is replenished by food supplies (even good ones)
5. modern stresses deplete the nutrient stores of the body beyond what is replenished by food supplies (even good ones)
6. some modern humans have a set of inherited illnesses and 'dis-eases' that is unlike our forefathers had to deal with - and the farm diet is not sufficient to supply the special needs of those individuals.

No - I do not advocate supporting the pharmaceutical industry - most of their 'vitamins' come from synthetics (yes - petroleum products and byproducts). There are 'natural' sourced vitamin and mineral supplements and those should be considered both for base nutrition 'insurance' and for healing components (as opposed to first line pharmaceuticals). And any nutritional supplementation should be done on an individual basis - with monitoring and adjustments for life stage, events, stresses, etc.

Ooooops - sorry - crawling down from soap box now.
