Tanya,
I have read many of the old BMJ journals. Cod liver oil is cited over 3,000 times! It bows out as the drug companies take over:-))

Sorry meant to add that the original article was not something I posted.
Just wanted to say that the British medical profession of the 1700s and 1800s according to the BMJ extolled the virtues of Cod liver Oil very, very often.....

Re: OT: Vitamin D - Remarkable Paper in British MedicalJournal
It would be interesting to know whether there's been any change in results (both specific to the reasons given, and also any other results) that have come along with the (?) changes in formulation.
Has anyone read anything about just when and why that change (higher ratio of A to D) occurred?

And it's difficult to imagine that entire *societies* would develop generations-long traditional practice involving something that was actually doing them harm. So I think the big question now needs to be *whether* in fact today's "cod liver oil" is functionally different than it used to be. And if so, since when, and by how much, and why... ?

Re: OT: Vitamin D - Remarkable Paper in British MedicalJournal
I'd have to look for CLO analysis in yesteryear and nowadays. Question is whether the measuring tools employed then and now of the A and the D would be the same in past and today.....In other words, it may be difficult to compare:-((
One thing that has changed for sure, is that our fish are loaded with PCB, metals etc. However that being said so is everything else. The iodide in the CLO might actually be beneficial as i read that mercury is flushed out with iodine. In the old days they gave potassium iodide to flush out 'lead'....]
I am not a chemist so this is all theory on my part....
