I don't really understand what you're talking about. But I saw the reference
to book, don't look me in the eyes, and thought i would relate this
story..that happened last friday to a friend of mine. She is deaf and she
recently started cooking for a family with one child with aspergers. My friend
reads lips. can only hear vowels. Last Friday she was asked to take care of
the 12 year old boy all day. At some point she said to him. "I have a
disability too, like you. You don't have to look into my eyes...but i need to
have your mouth facing me ". From that moment the boy started looking into
her eyes and didn't stop talking for an hour, asking her questions about her
grandchildren and this and that.

That's a lovely story.
And I heard something interesting the other day along similar lines, about a little girl with selective mutism. She will only ever talk to her direct family. With anyone else, even other relatives, all communication has to be done through a third (direct family) party.
Until the day she discovered mobile phones while her parents were talking to her grandmother. She was given the phone, told it was her grandmother....and started talking to her grandmother directly. Tears of joy from grandmother! Now the little girl asks to phone her grandmother so that she can talk to her!
