argh cough rubrics!

Okay, comparing these two rubrics:

Cough; LYING; AGG. (m, 177, 14-313) (177)
Cough; LYING; AGG.; Down (m, 68, 1-9) (68)
What the heck is the difference? How does one lie *other* than "down"--or does the first rubric mean that the person coughs when they *tell* a lie? (I'm kidding--I hope!)

If we had information on their sources it would help. I just compared the two rubrics and the longer rubric has sources beyond Boger and Boenninghausen. So the longer one is newer it seems. Also, the 4th level remedies are represented in the second larger rubric, and more second level rubric. I am guessing that these later authors were more aggressive for what reason?

I would group the two together

What I started with, actually, was just tossing out the smaller one, because it looks like the larger one contains everything that's in the smaller one. I see what you mean--the larger includes more recent sources, but seems to also just include more from older sources as well; I guess the smaller is just an older and less complete rubric. Odd that they weren't simply merged.

Sure, combine the two.
But you don't see anything odd in drawing a distinction between < lying, and < lying down? I just thought that a pretty peculiar "distinction without a difference," and I found it briefly amusing to speculate about how one could "lie up" or whatever.

But, I think the answer is as Ellen said, one rubric is more current.

If you need to fully understand a rubric I always say read the remedies in the rubric - you'll get all the answers you want. There are many positions when lying, not always have to be 'down'.

Might also be a type of cough as well that varies.

Is it possible that the action of lying down is the aggravating factor? - a cough is aggravated while lying could happen at any time while the person is lying, but the more specific 'lying down' may be something like borax being aggravated by downward motion - will just have to check the remedies and see if it is specified.
