H'y after long-term steroids [was: Thoughts requested on a case

Post by Shannon Nelson »

I would agree that it may be "the simillimum of the time" based on the history and current picture; actually I thought that was part of the point of the post!

While we're on the topic, I'd be very interested to hear what anyone here has experienced re treating a patient who's been on long-term steroids? I was taught that it can be very difficult, and I know that some homeopaths (at least at that time) refused to even attempt homeopathy on a long-term steroid patient, because they did not find it to work.

But I know that some do so successfully--can anyone here share experiences in this?

Hello Shannon,
I've had plenty of patients come after (and some during) steroid treatment - some after decades of steroid treatement. The course of treatment was always completely individualized. If they have been on long term steroids - you can almost automatically say it is a relatively difficult case - but then long term drugs of almost any kind make for a more difficult case. Not impossible - just difficult - mostly in the sense that the original symptoms are masked, altered and covered with new drug induced symptoms, and there is a new layer of fears brought by the multiple doctors they have been to. With common sense approach to detoxifying the system, retraining the brain to refrain from pharmaceuticals to solve every little problem, support of their personal empowerment over their health, and support of the body systems in the healing process, I've seem excellent results - almost every time. The single most difficult part of these patients has been the overwhelming fear of not taking drugs instilled by their prescribing physicians.

Thanks Donna, very heartening!
Do you find it either useful or necessary to depart from the standard classical approach--I realize that's not a well defined term... ? I ask because I wonder if this is the reason for e.g. Vithoulkas's unwillingness to take on long-term steroid patients. (I don't know whether this is *still* his position--my information is from about 20 years back; and he was very definitely not alone in this position.)

I have had to deal with patients on long term steroids quite a few times and the resulkt is mixed. The best results are with asthma patients.
The idea is to reduce the steroids slowly. Firs of all do not give very high potencies where you are unable to repeat. Go for LM potencies or 6C definitely not more than 30 and repeat in water. reduce the gap of the medicine but not the dose. Thus if a patient is having prednisolone 60 mg once a day let him continue with that but increase the gap to 36 hours. Change medicine as symptoms appear - this is important. As soon as you get a crisis treat that. Once the patient is stable make the gap 48 hours and so on.
Once the patient is off medicine take a proper case taking again and give the indicated remedy in higher potency and single dose.
It works in most cases but not all.
Best regards
Elham

I agree (except for the last bit, I'd stick with the LM's why not?),
the ultimate aim is cure and when taking the case you will get a mixed
sx pattern but hopefully you can still prescribe - but very slow and
careful weaning off the drugs has to be part of the cure package,
won't happen without it.
