Do remedies contain Steroid?

Post by Priscilla Tan »

When I mentioned to my doctor that I may pursue homeopathy to treat my son's sensitive nose, she cautioned me that homeopathic remedies may contain steroid.

Is this a valid concern?

Thanks

Hi Priscilla,

There have been instances where a *disreputable* person sold as "homeopathic" substances that contained clinically active doses of steroids. This, however, would be completely fraudulent, and none of the reputable homeopathic pharmacies do any such thing! It does pay, tho, to know something about whoever is making and dispensing the remedies one purchases!

Best wishes,
Shannon

There is sometimes a suspicion Chinese medicine may contain steroids and the orthodox probably do not discern the difference.
The politically correct references to CAM in Medical journals often have a salutary article warning of drug interactions and liver damage and stating more research necessary. They are so superficial and useless . Jean

That is absolute rubbish, Priscilla! If you get your remedies from a reputable homeopath, or homeopathic chemist, this is unthinkable!!
The only remedy that might contain steroids is a remedy made from steroids - such as Cortisone - which you can use in a homeopathic potency to detox someone who's been on steroids. And this remedy will be called 'Cortisone'. However, most classical homeopaths wouldn't dream of using even this.

I remember reading about homeopaths in India, I think, that were giving
homeopathy complexes that actually had steroids in them. I have been
trying to remember where I saw it, unsuccessfully at the moment.
Perhaps this doctor read the same thing and therefore assumes it is
common practice. Sadly we are back to anyone being able to call any
sort of practice homeopathy because we have no clear legislation or
guidelines in law.

The production of Homeopathic remedies in the USA is controlled under
HPUS law (Homœopathic Pharmacopœia of the United States) which prevents any adulteration. Only if the actual remedy where corticosteroid would it _possibly_
have any amount of steriod depending on potency.

Other countries have similar safeguards, I would guess.

Pass that along to the clueless doc. Maybe she is thinking of
allopathic treatment which seems to very much predominate in
the use of steroids for whatever ails one. Projection, possibly? :)

I think there should be a better explanation.

Homeopathic remedies mean a single remedy in a dilution form or globule form. Here, the scope of mixing a steroid is nil since the cost difference between a steroid and the solution is in the ratio of 10 : 1 (at least in India). So commercially that is suicide. Who will sell for 1000% loss ?

Any other dispensation where some companies mix two or more remedies and market in a non generic name is where all this is possible. The compound is proprietory and pricing need not follow the same simplex pattern.

In other words if remedy 'a' costs USD 'x' and remedy 'b' costs USD 'y', the mixture will not and need not be x+y in the market. The price will be multifold. Here, to increase the effectiveness of the mixture, some companies or practioners mix steroids. The retail price will easily accommodate the cost of steroids. Some practioners may even give steroid saying it as homeo remedy.

This the full background as I know it. Not all do it. But, as is the case, the Allopathic Industry always makes a molehill into a mountain esp when it concerns Homeopathy, its bete noire.
