We've had too much fear inculcated in us about fevers. You don't have to worry about fevers that come with viral or bacterial illnesses -- they are there for a reason, and the body needs them to heal effectively and efficiently. It's fevers from exogenous causes (drugs, chemicals, sunstroke) that you need to worry about, because these override the system designed to maintain homeostasis in our bodies -- and these fevers can rise to dangerous levels.

Which misses my point entirely--re-read the circumstances I described.
But I do take your point that it's not a good thing; I agree with that 100%.

My personal favorite fever treatment is a very hot bath, working up a good *sweat*! Then climbing quickly under warm covers. Mmmmm.... Another example of non-remedy homeopathy, I would say! And seems to really speed recovery, too.

The thing to watch with fever is dehydration. A dehydrated child is more likely to experience problems.
To lower a fever you can sponge the calves with a body temperature wet washrag. No need for a cold bath, that can shock the system. All the blood goes down to the feet and back up again, so you can access that blood and cool it like a radiator by sponging the calves.
Conversely, sick kids running around barefoot on a cold floor, or with legs too exposed on a cold windy day, may cool their blood too much. As a result, the blood returning to the lungs gets too cold. This allows infection to take place in the lungs (where a cold 'drops" into the chest) and also confuses the immune response, which figures that the blood is too cold and needs to raise body temperature to help the immune fight, so the kid gets more fever.
anyway, that's my 2 cents worth.
regards,
Paul

Re: Use of Paracetamol for children under 1?
I have 2 handouts I give to parents of children with fevers
One is from a translation of a Dutch Govt handout that is used by Drs there and the other is an article titled ‘Is our fear of fever hurting our children” and it outlines the problems with the OTC antipyretics/ anti-inflammatories and why fever is our friend. They may be of use to others. They always incite great debate and discussion which I always find beneficial as it makes people think before they rush to act and suppress symptoms without thinking how and why the body is reacting in this way.
